Arsenal vs. Liverpool: Team News & Possible Lineups

Arsenal Women and Liverpool Women Lineups are derived from previous match days. We take into consideration how strong the opponents are, what players are injured and of course team news before the match.

Team News Arsenal

Head coach Renée Slegers gave an update on Kim Little, Leah Williamson, Daphne van Domselaar, and Chloe Kelly:

“Both Kim and Leah will be in the squad tomorrow, so that’s really positive news,” our head coach said at the Sobha Realty Training Centre on Friday, “they’ve been training with the squad and they both look good, so that’s really positive.

“Leah has been away for much longer than Kim, so Kim is available for more minutes than Leah will be tomorrow.”

“Chloe Kelly came back with an injury, a little ligament in the back of her knee. So she won’t be available tomorrow and I don’t expect her to be available for the rest of the block. But we’ll see.

“Daphne won’t be available. She’s been managing a quad tendon issue and it needed an injection, so she won’t be available for the rest of the block.”

Anneke Borbe will have to step up in goal as Van Domselaar and Zinsberger are both out due to injury.

What the coach has to say

RenĂ©e Slegers on Liverpool: “Like I said, they’ve had close results. You see in the way they play, like for example against Chelsea, how they put Chelsea under pressure, I think Chelsea had a hard time getting out of their own half. So I think they’ll probably pride themselves, Liverpool, on their defensive structure and putting even the top teams under pressure, and I think they do that well. They did that well in that game, they will be missing some players tomorrow I think, but I think their structure is strong.

“I think they had a lot of work ethic in their defensive structure and I think they’ve had close results and the league is like that at the moment this year, which is great. So they will really put questions to us, especially in their defensive structure, what they can do when they get a little bit lower on the pitch, how they will try to counter-attack us, we will have to manage those moments well.”

Team News Liverpool

Gareth Taylor with the latest squad update: “With Fisky, she has unfortunately suffered an injury away with England. This game will be too soon for her. We’re hoping as the week progresses that we could potentially get her closer to it.

“It’s just a couple of other real niggles that we are nursing a little bit on-pitch and off-pitch today. Tomorrow we’ll know exactly what we have.

“There’s no doubt we are a little bit light even before all the injuries, but now they’re starting to tot up a little bit, which can be frustrating, especially with Fisky because you think those type of ones would be avoidable.”

On Sam Kerr: “Unfortunately she was playing for a few weeks with a back issue, which is a strange one, because it’s a slight stress fracture.

“She was feeling some discomfort from that, and it’s usually something that occurs in younger players. No disrespect to Sam! We’ve had that joke with her… usually those types of injuries come from growth spurts.

“She was pushing through the pain barrier against Brighton and against Chelsea. We had it scanned and found an issue which is something you can’t continue playing with. We need to obviously offload her and similar to Fisky and others it’s a blow because Sam has been really vital to what we’re doing.”

What the coach has to say

Head coach Gareth Taylor ahead of the meeting with Arsenal: “There was always belief there,” Taylor said. “Sometimes, it might not always look that way from the outside looking in but internally, the players are really onboard with what we are trying to do. You can see signs of it growing in terms of us being a little bit more difficult to play against.

“Outside of Everton in the first game of the season, where we played some of the best football but ended up with a really weird scoreline, we’ve never been beaten by more than the odd goal, other than 2-0 against Man United. That tells you that we are moving it in the right direction.”

Arsenal vs. Liverpool: Previous Meetings & Stats

Arsenal and Liverpool go head-to-head in the Women’s Super League after the international break. Both sides are without crucial players due to injuries and will have to work around the difficulties that brings. For the Gunners, there is also some positive news, with Williamson and Little back in the matchday squad.

The teams last met in March this year, when Arsenal secured a 4–0 win, helped by two own goals from Matthews. Liverpool’s last away win at Arsenal in the WSL was on October 1st, 2023, when Miri Taylor scored the only goal of the game.

Gareth Taylor’s side knows it will be a very difficult meeting with Arsenal, especially as neither team can afford to drop any more points. Arsenal sit in 4th place with 16 points after 9 games, a disappointing position for the Women’s Champions League winners. Liverpool are at the bottom of the table with just 2 points. The club has had a tough start to the season and is looking to get back to winning ways.
