How WSL Positions Are Decided
Women’s Super League positions are determined by the number of points each club collects across the season. Teams receive three points for a win, one for a draw and none for a defeat. The club finishing with the most points is crowned WSL champion.
If two or more clubs finish level on points, goal difference is the first tie-breaker. If their goal difference is also equal, the team that has scored the most goals is placed higher. The next deciding factors are the number of matches won and then the clubs’ head-to-head league records. If the teams still cannot be separated and their final positions must be decided, a play-off match or series of matches can be arranged.
Under the current European allocation, the WSL’s top three teams qualify for the following season’s UEFA Women’s Champions League. The precise entry stage for each position is determined by UEFA’s access list, with the arrangements for the 2027/28 competition still to be confirmed.
The expanded 14-team WSL also introduces new consequences at the bottom of the table. The club finishing 14th is automatically relegated to WSL 2 and replaced by the second-tier champions. The team finishing 13th must contest a promotion-relegation play-off against the WSL 2 runners-up, with the winner securing a place in the following season’s WSL.
