Chelsea Women have confirmed that Lauren James has signed a new long-term contract that will keep the England international at the club until June 2030. James has become one of the most influential players in Chelsea’s squad since returning to the club in the 2021/22 season from Manchester United Women.
The forward originally came through Chelsea’s academy, playing for the club’s youth teams from Under-10 to Under-14 level before continuing her development elsewhere. Her return to west London has since proven to be a major success for both player and club.
Since rejoining Chelsea, James has made 105 appearances and scored 31 goals, playing a key role in the club’s domestic success. During that period she has helped the team win four Women’s Super League titles, three Women’s FA Cup trophies and the FA Women’s League Cup.
Words from Lauren James
James expressed her excitement after committing her future to Chelsea.
“I’m really happy and over the moon to have signed a new contract with Chelsea. It’s been my club since I was young, so I’m really pleased to have extended my stay here. I can’t wait to make more memories, hopefully have more success and win more trophies with this amazing club.”
Rise to Stardom
James announced herself in style after returning to Chelsea, scoring her first goal for the club in a 9–0 victory over Leicester City Women. Her performances quickly established her as one of the most exciting attacking players in English women’s football.
That form also earned her recognition at international level with the England Women’s National Team under head coach Sarina Wiegman. During the 2022/23 season, James was named PFA Young Player of the Year, highlighting her rapid development at both club and international level.
Her impact continued to grow the following season. James scored 16 goals and started 23 matches, producing some of her best performances in a Chelsea shirt. Her outstanding form was recognised with a number of individual honours, including:
- Women’s Super League Player of the Month (November and January)
- Selection in the FIFPRO Women’s World XI
- Inclusion in the PFA WSL Team of the Year
- Chelsea Women’s Player of the Year
Overcoming setbacks
Despite her success, James has also had to overcome several injury setbacks during her career. Each time she returned strongly, continuing to make an impact for Chelsea while maintaining her place in the England squad.
Her perseverance paid off when she regained full fitness in time to help England win UEFA Women’s Euro 2025, adding a major international trophy to her growing list of achievements.
Reaching a New Milestone
During the 2025/26 season, James surpassed the milestone of 100 appearances for Chelsea, further underlining her importance to the club. With her new contract running until 2030, Chelsea have secured the long-term future of one of the most talented forwards in women’s football.
For James, the extension offers the opportunity to continue building her legacy at the club where her football journey first began.
Her focus now shifts to the Women’s League Cup Final against Manchester United.
