The German Football Association founded the Frauen-Bundesliga in 1990. The league was the same as the men’s but with north and south division. After seven season they formed a uniform league with all the teams. There are now twelve teams in the Frauen-Bundesliga, but the league announced that there will be 14 teams from the 2025/2026 season. The top three teams qualify for the Women’s Champions League, in different stages of the competition.
Besides the regular club competition there is also the DFB-Pokal and DFB-Supercup. The DFB-Pokal Frauen is the main cup competition for women’s football in Germany. It started in 1980 and evolved through the years.
- Who can participate in the DFB-Pokal Frauen? All clubs from the Frauen-Bundesliga and 2. Frauen-Bundesliga. Also the winners from the regional cup competitions, but the second teams from clubs that are already participating, are not allowed.
- From 2025–26 on: 32 teams will compete in a play-off round, while there is no regional split-up (21 winners of the regional cups, five promoted teams from the Regionalliga and six teams from the 2. Bundesliga), to determine the 16 teams in the first round. There, the Bundesliga and the four best-placed teams from the 2. Bundesliga will join
- VfL Wolfsburg won the Cup every season since 2014/2015.
