What’s Next in the Women’s Nations League 2025
Defending champions Spain will meet Sweden in the semi-final, with both teams entering the knockout stage under new head coaches.
For Sweden, longtime coach Peter Gerhardsson stepped down after UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 and was replaced by Tony Gustavsson, a move announced before the tournament.
Spain’s situation was more turbulent. After losing to England in the EURO 2025 final, head coach Montse Tomé was dismissed. The Spanish federation appointed Sonia Bermúdez, a coach with limited big-stage experience, to take charge of the reigning Nations League champions.
The other semi-final pits Germany against France. Germany finished third in the previous Nations League by beating the Netherlands, securing both the bronze medal and qualification for the Paris 2024 Olympics.
Historically, Germany has the upper hand in this matchup, with 13 wins against France’s 6. Their most recent clash came in the EURO 2025 quarter-finals, where Germany edged France 6–5 on penalties before being eliminated by Spain in the semi-finals.
