La Liga F is not only the highest level of women’s football in Spain. The league is also considered one of the best in Europe. The league was founded in 1988, and has operated every year since, although it has undergone several changes in format and names. It was not until he 2021-2022 season that the league became fully professional.
History La Liga F
For the first twelve years the men’s teams were creating the calendars for women’s football in Spain. By 2000 the clubs wanted something to change so Levante submitted a proposal to the Spanish Football Federation. In their proposal they asked for the women’s teams to organize their own competition. If the federation would not accept the new conditions, the women’s teams were considering boycotting the competitions.
La Liga F was renamed Superliga in the 2001-2002 season. The group format was changed to playing the other teams twice, home and away. At this time the league consisted of 14 teams and that did not change until the 2008-2009 season. Another two teams were added to the competition.
Decline of quality
In 2009-2010 the league increased their teams from 16 to 24. The teams were in groups where all the clubs where geographically nearby, to minimise travel. It did not go as planned as some teams had to withdraw due to financial reasons. Three season later the competition size was back to 16 teams.
Demanding better working conditions
The Spanish players went on strike on 22 October 2019 to demand better working conditions and negotiate over salaries. The strike was lifted about a month later after reaching an agreement with the ACFF to resume negotiations.
