Recent transfer rumours have linked Denise O’Sullivan with Women’s Super League club Liverpool, according to Barbara O Connell. The Republic of Ireland international is currently under contract with NC Courage through the 2026 season. The 31-year-old midfielder is the Courage’s all-time leader in both minutes played (10,688) and appearances (128), and she has helped lead the club to seven NWSL trophies during her eight seasons in North Carolina.

Liverpool could certainly use reinforcements and experience, as the team currently sits at the bottom of the table with just three points from 11 games. The Reds have lost eight matches under head coach Gareth Taylor. The closest club in the standings is West Ham United with five points, followed by Everton with eight. The second half of the season is crucial for Liverpool if they want to avoid relegation to Women’s Super League 2. The team opens the new year against London City Lionesses on Sunday, 11 January 2026.

Suffering a heavy defeat

Liverpool’s struggles this season became even more apparent following a heavy 9–1 defeat to Chelsea in the Women’s League Cup just before the winter break. Gareth Taylor spoke about the loss:

“All the words you used there are the words I would use as well. We knew it would be a tough game, tough opponent. I think we gifted a lot of goals to them. When you put all that into the mix and we don’t perform to the required level with the battles and the duels, we were naïve in some of our play and, like I say, gifted them goals. You can’t do that against a team like Chelsea.”

On possible reinforcements in the winter transfer window, Taylor added:

“Yeah, of course. We’ve identified targets we want to bring to the club, of course, but I don’t think it’s something that’s going to be able to flick a switch and change. There needs to be probably a lot of improvements and probably getting to the summer, retaining our status [in the top flight] is going to be really, really important because then that allows you to be able to do more. I think you’re limited with the amount of players you can bring in during this January window as well, it’s quite limited in that sense. With all of the injuries we have, I’d love to bring in what Chelsea probably have, a second starting XI.”
