The National Women’s Soccer League is a major success in the United States. The league launched in 2012. The big change this time were the subsidies from regional federations such as the United States Soccer Federation, Canadian Soccer Association and the Mexican Football Federation. The league is growing at the moment and that’s a great thing. In 2022 San Diego Waves and Angel City joined the roster. The most recent additions are Utah Royals and Bay FC. In 2026 they expect a club from Boston (Boss Nation) and another franchise will join the league. In the 2024 season we had an early winner. After playing 23 matches Orlando Pride was still unbeaten. They won 17 out of 23 and had 57 points. Orlando Pride went to the playoffs as one of the favourites. They continued their streak and won the final against Washington spirit. Marta’s interview after winning the NWSL Shield 2024:
“Wow. It means a lot. Like I said on the field after the game, we have been working so hard from the beginning and every single game. And we looked to have this moment, especially here in our house, in front of our fans and families and friends. It’s unbelievable. Something that I, wow, I dreamed about, but to be honest, never believed that it was going to happen the way that it did [undefeated]. And I can tell you guys, I don’t think that’s going to happen again with this team or another team. I’m sorry, but it’s so special and the way that we did it was incredible.”
When does the next National Women’s Soccer League season start?
The NWSL 2025 schedule is out and starts on the 14th of March. Orlando Pride and Washington Spirit went head-to-head in the Challenge Cup the week before. Washington Spirit won.
