The Paris 2024 Olympics women’s football reached the semi-finals. On the 6th of August the final 4 will play their matches. New Zealand is unfortunately not one of the teams who made it to the next round. The team ended up in the last place with 0 points in the group. New Zealand was in group A with Canada, France and Colombia. Let’s have a look at the Olympic New Zealand Squad 2024.
Olympic New Zealand Squad 2024
The following players are selected by Michael Mayne, the head coach of New Zealand’s women’s football team. The nation qualified during the OFC Women’s Olympic Qualifying Tournament. Michael Mayne was supposed to be the assistant coach to Jitka Klimková, but she opted out after an independent workplace investigation. Klimková is not expected to return any time soon. This is the Olympic New Zealand Squad 2024:
Goalkeepers: Anna Leat, Victoria Esson.
Defenders: Mackenzie Barry, C.J Bott, Katie Bowen, Ally Green, Meikayla Moore, Ali Riley.
Midfielders: Macey Fraser, Katie Kitching, Malia Steinmetz, Rebekah Stott, Kate Taylor.
Forwards: Gabi Rennie, Indiah-Paige Riley, Grace Jale, Milly Clegg, Jacqui Hand.
Alternates: Claudia Bunge, Michaela Foster, Annalie Longo, Murphy Sheaff.
The 18-player squad has all the qualities it needs. The only surprise is the absence of Katie Wilkinson. She went to three Olympics with the Football Ferns, scored 32 times and scored the goal that gave New Zealand their first World Cup win. Michael Mayne said it was a very tough call not to select Wilkinson. He wanted to find the right balance in the small 18-player squad. Mayne thinks this time other players will rise up to the occasion, as he goes in with a defending mindset.
Schedule before the tournament
The FIFA international window was between the 8th and 16th of July. The Football Ferns took this opportunity to play against Zambia on the 13th of July. We watched the match for free on FIFA+. New Zealand vs Zambia ended up in a 1-1 draw. The Football Ferns only scored through the penalty from Katie Kitching. It was Zambia that took the lead before that. Not a great start.
After Canada Drone Gate the match against New Zealand continued as scheduled. The Football Ferns scored the opening goal but did not maintain the lead. Canada eventually won with 2-1 after goals from Lacasse and Viens.
Group Stage Schedule New Zealand
The Olympic New Zealand Squad was in Group A with Canada, Colombia and France. They played matches on the following dates:
- Thursday the 25th of July 17:00 Canada vs New Zealand – Result: 2-1
- Sunday the 28th of July 17:00 New Zealand vs Colombia – Result: 0-2
- Wednesday the 31st of July 21:00 New Zealand vs France – Result: 1-2
