Only five days left until the Paris 2024 Olympics start. Lena Oberdorf was the last player to suffer an injury and miss the tournament. Now the Canada Women’s Football team has lost an important player: Sydney Collins. Not an ACL injury this time, but a fractured leg.

Sydney Collins suffers a fractured leg

Canada faced one last opponent before the Olympics 2024: Nigeria behind closed doors. During the match, Sydney Collins got injured. After examination, it was clear that the defender fractured her leg on Wednesday. Collins must be replaced, and Bev Priestman chose Gabrielle Carle.

“Our hearts go out to Sydney during this difficult time. She has worked incredibly hard to return in time for Paris 2024, and while this is a setback, we know she will come back stronger. She will be with us in spirit every step of the way. With the depth and resilience of our roster, it’s a next-player-up mentality, and both Gabby and Desiree’s experience will be invaluable to our team’s success”, head coach Bev Priestman said.

Carle is a 25-year-old defender who plays for the Washington Spirit in the National Women’s Soccer League. She was named an alternate for the Olympics 2016 and 2020. Canada is the current Gold Medalist, and this time Carle gets a chance to be part of the Canada women’s football team that defends their title.
