Spain was one of the favorites at the Paris 2024 Olympics women’s football but they did not manage to earn a medal. The team ended up on the fourth place after they lost the Bronze Medal Match against Germany 0-1. Spain qualified after winning all their group-stage matches and the quarter-final against Colombia. Brazil eventually stopped them in their track, winning by 4-2 in the semi-finals. They struggled with all their opponents, never truly displaying that powerful Spanish football long enough to win matches confidently. Let’s find out what players represented Spain this summer. The Olympics women’s football started on Thursday the 25th of July with matches across all the groups.
Olympic Spain Squad 2024
The following players were selected by Montse Tomé for the two final EURO 2025 qualifiers and the Paris 2024 Olympics. Tomé started out with a 26-player squad but decided on these 18 players to bring to Paris this month.
Goalkeepers: Cata Coll, Misa Rodríquez.
Defenders: Laia Aleixandri, Irene Paredes, Ona Batlle, Laia Codina, Oihane Hernández, Olga Carmona.
Midfielders: Alexia Putellas, Aitana Bonmatí, Jenni Hermoso,Patri Guijarro.
Forwards: Lucía García, Eva Navarro, Mariona Caldentey, Athenea Del Castillo, Teresa Abelleira, Salma Paralluelo.
Spain won the World Cup 2023 and the Nations League with most of these players. The return of Patri is good to see, bringing the level of the Olympic Spain Squad 2024 back to its brilliant heights. We are looking forward to seeing the Spanish play during the tournament. Tomé extended her contract until August 2025, so she will also be in charge of the team during the Euros.
Schedule before the tournament
Before the tournament, Spain played two EURO 2025 Qualifiers on the 12th and 16th of July. During the qualifiers, Spain lost to Czechia but managed to win 2-0 from Belgium. The preparations are well underway and the Spanish Olympic Squad gives a strong impression. The Olympic tournament starts today with matches in all groups.
Spain already qualified for the Euro 2025, so their matches against Czechia and Belgium were great practice for Paris. Montse Tomé has every Spanish player that she could possibly need to make this one of the biggest trophies yet.
