Olympics Australia Squad 2024
The squad size for the Paris 2024 Olympics is only 18 players. This is criticized throughout the whole football world. Later the rules changed slightly so it would be easier to rotate with the alternates, making it 22 player teams.
Goalkeepers: Mackenzie Arnold, Teagan Micah
Defenders: Ellie Carpenter, Steph Catley, Clare Hunt, Alanna Kennedy, Clare Polkinghorne, Kaitlyn Torpey
Midfielders: Kyra Cooney-Cross, Katrina Gorry, Emily van Egmond, Cortnee Vine, Tameka Yallop, Clare Wheeler
Forwards: Caitlin Foord, Mary Fowler, Michelle Heyman, Hayley Raso
Steph Catley captained the squad and Emily van Egmond is her vice-captain. Their best finish is fourth during the Olympics in Tokyo. The Matildas were in a really tough group with the USA and Germany. Zambia might be the underdog but should definitely not be underestimated.
Tony Gustavsson on his Olympic Squad
“This has been an incredibly challenging squad to select with so many quality players competing fiercely for limited spots,” Gustavsson said. “It has been a methodical process over the past couple of years to reach to this point, and each of the players selected bring unique and beneficial qualities to our team that will be vital for our Paris 2024 campaign.”
Sharn Freier, Charlotte Grant, Courtney Nevin and Lydia Williams have been named as the travelling reserves. The travelling reserves can be selected as a replacement athlete onto the Olympics Australia Squad 2024 in case of injury or other withdrawal of one of the selected 18 athletes. The team is dealing with some injuries such as Caitlin Foord’s and Steph Catley’s. It’s very possible that some of the alternates have to step in.
Australia lost their friendly against Canada on the 12th. The Matilda’s opened the score through Freier, but conceded the equalizer before half time. Canada was more dominant in the second half and scored the winner just in time.
