Washington Spirit have signed Italian forward Sofia Cantore on a three-year deal through 2028, as first reported by Mauro Munno in May. Although Cantore had just extended her contract with Juventus in January 2025 until 2028, the Spirit activated her release clause—reportedly worth over €300,000—to secure the transfer.
Sofia Cantore Career Highlights
Cantore made her senior debut with Fiammamonza in 2015 before joining Juventus in 2017, becoming a key figure in their women’s team. She was loaned out to Hellas Verona, Fiorentina, and Sassuolo to gain top-flight experience.
In 2022, Cantore suffered a fibula fracture that sidelined her for an extended period. Since returning to full fitness, she has made 64 appearances over the past two seasons. The 2024/25 campaign was an incredible year, in which she scored 13 goals in 24 matches across all competitions. Her Juventus career totals now exceed 40 goals and 20 assists in 120 appearances.
What Sofia Cantore had to say
“I’m very proud to join this important club and grateful for their trust in my abilities,” said Cantore. “I’m excited to start this new chapter of my career as the first Italian player in the NWSL and can’t wait to work every day with coach Adrián González and my new teammates. And of course, I’m thrilled to challenge myself in this great league! I’m looking forward to joining the team after the Euros and celebrating together with the fans. FORZA WASHINGTON SPIRIT!”
Words from the head coach
“Sofia is an important signing for this Spirit team as we continue to build up our roster to compete for trophies,” said incoming Head Coach Adrián González. “Her extensive experience in the Italian leagues and exceptional talent in the attacking third will help add a new layer for the Spirit moving forward.”
