Four days after parting ways with head coach Rehanne Skinner, West Ham United have appointed Rita Guarino as their new manager. The Italian head coach has signed an 18-month deal with the Hammers and has already joined the team. She will take charge of her first match in the new year, on Sunday, January 11, against Chelsea.

Guarino brings significant experience to West Ham. She has previously coached Italy’s U17 national team, Inter Women and, most notably, Juventus Women, where she enjoyed a highly successful four-year spell. During her time in Turin, she led the Bianconere to four Serie A titles, two Supercoppa Italiana trophies and one Coppa Italia.

The new head coach also enjoyed an illustrious playing career, earning 99 caps for Italy and establishing herself as one of the most influential figures in the development of women’s football in the country. West Ham United is currently near the bottom of the WSL table with only 5 points. Guarino immediately dives into the race against relegation.

What Rita Guarino had to say

“I’m so happy to be joining West Ham United. It is a Club with a big history and strong values that align with my own. I’ve spoken with the Board, and I’m really excited by the project here. There is a lot of talent and experience in the team, and I want to support the girls to develop as individuals but also as a collective.

“I want to build a team that is organised, aggressive with the ball and that tries to recognise and use space. The mentality of the team, the togetherness and hard work, is the most important thing. I’m proud to be here and I’m looking forward to the chapter ahead in the best league in the world.”

Why was Rehanne Skinner Sacked?

In a statement West Ham United said: “Recent results have not matched expectations and the Board of Directors believe that a change is necessary to help improve the team’s position in the Barclays Women’s Super League as soon as possible.  The Board would like to thank Rehanne for her hard work and commitment during her time with the Hammers and wish her every success for the future.”
