Chelsea Women are preparing for a new era after two of the club’s biggest names announced their departures. Club captain Millie Bright has confirmed her retirement from professional football, while Australian superstar Sam Kerr will leave Chelsea upon the expiration of her contract this summer.

The departures mark the end of an incredibly successful period for Chelsea Women, who have dominated English women’s football over the last decade. With the Women’s Super League season nearing its conclusion and UEFA Women’s Champions League qualification path still at stake, attention is already shifting toward what comes next for the club.

Sam Kerr Leaves Chelsea Women After Six Trophy-Filled Years

Sam Kerr will leave Chelsea Women after six and a half unforgettable seasons in London. Since joining the club in 2019, the Australian international has become one of the greatest forwards in Women’s Super League history.

Kerr made 177 appearances for Chelsea and scored an outstanding 115 goals, finishing just one goal behind Chelsea Women’s all-time leading scorer Fran Kirby.

During her time at Stamford Bridge, Kerr helped Chelsea establish domestic dominance. She won five Women’s Super League titles, three FA Cups, three League Cups, and one Community Shield. Individually, she also claimed the Women’s Super League Golden Boot in both the 2020/21 and 2021/22 seasons.

Despite suffering a serious ACL injury, Kerr successfully returned to top form and remained a key figure for Chelsea during the second half of the season.

Reflecting on her Chelsea career, Kerr said:

“When I reflect on my Chelsea career and doing it for the last time against Manchester United this Saturday, I just feel happy. Happy that it happened, and I feel so grateful to have played for this club for six years and won as many trophies as we could.”

What’s Next for Sam Kerr?

Speculation surrounding Kerr’s future has already intensified. Multiple clubs in the National Women’s Soccer League have reportedly shown interest, including expansion side Denver Summit, who recently began their inaugural season.

Given her experience, leadership, and goal-scoring record, Kerr is expected to remain one of the most sought-after players in women’s football this summer.

Millie Bright Announces Retirement From Professional Football

Chelsea captain Millie Bright also confirmed that she will leave the club this summer, but unlike Kerr, Bright is retiring from professional football entirely.

The announcement surprised many supporters, although Bright had already stepped away from international football before UEFA Women’s EURO 2025. Competition for her place in Chelsea’s defence had also increased significantly in recent seasons.

Bright spent 12 years at Chelsea Women and became one of the club’s most iconic players. She made 314 appearances, won 20 trophies, and played a central role in every one of Chelsea’s eight Women’s Super League titles.

The defender joined Chelsea from Doncaster Belles in 2015 and quickly developed into one of the best defenders in women’s football. She eventually became club captain and established herself as the longest-serving player in Chelsea Women history.

In addition to holding Chelsea’s all-time appearance record, Bright will continue working with the club as a club ambassador following her retirement.

What’s Next for Chelsea Women?

Chelsea Women now face a crucial summer transfer window as the club looks to replace two legendary players.

Although the departures of Bright and Kerr represent a significant transition, Chelsea remain one of the strongest teams in Europe and are expected to be active in the transfer market.

Before attention fully turns to transfers, Chelsea still have one final Women’s Super League match remaining against Manchester United on Saturday, May 16. The match will serve as an emotional farewell for the departing players.

Chelsea can still finish second in the Women’s Super League standings. If Arsenal lose to Liverpool and Chelsea defeat Manchester United, the Blues will secure second place and strengthen momentum heading into next season.

Qualification for the UEFA Women’s Champions League is already secured for the top three teams. Fortunately for Chelsea and Arsenal, fourth-placed Manchester United cannot close the six-point gap with only one game remaining.

With major changes on and off the pitch, Chelsea Women are entering one of the most important transitional periods in the club’s recent history.
