Australian right back Ellie Carpenter currently plays for Olympique Lyon in the Première Ligue, but according to Soccerdonna, multiple clubs are interested in signing her. The 25-year-old has a contract until 2026 with the French club. She is one of the key players for the Matildas and could be a great addition to any club.
Ellie Carpenter’s career
The defender joined Wester Sydney Wanderers in 2015 and started in all twelve games. That season she already showed that she is a versatile defender, whose speed is an addition to any attacking play. Carpenter earned a call-up to The Matildas, despite only being 15 years old.
The Australian international spent two seasons at Canberra United before moving away from home to the NWSL. Carpenter signed for Portland Thorns and became the youngest player in the NWSL history on her debut on May 9, 2018. She later returned to Australia to play for Melbourne City on Loan before signing for Lyon in 2020.
Successes with Olympique Lyon
Although she had to find her way in the first season with Lyon, she now is a key player in their defensive lineup. In 2022, Carpenter suffered an ACL injury, forcing her to watch from the sidelines for many months.
“Getting injured was a blessing in disguise,” Carpenter said. “The World Cup was in July, so I knew I had over a year to recover. I felt confident in myself to be able to come back, but you just never know, anything can happen, so I wanted to get surgery straightaway.
“I think this injury is the best thing that could’ve happened to me. I needed this time and this break. A forced break, not one that I would’ve wanted.”
Lyon extended her contract on the 28th of June until 2026.
