Ingrid Engen joined FC Barcelona in the summer of 2021 as the first signing of the season. The Norwegian international has brought plenty of valuable experience to the squad, winning several trophies with the Blaugranes, including the Women’s Champions League, two domestic cups and two league titles. According to Esport3, Engen is on Olympique Lyon’s radar this summer. She might be open to a move as the arrival of Aleixandri could impact her playing time.
Potentially leaving on a free transfer
Engen’s contract expires this summer, meaning she could leave Barcelona as a free agent. During the 2025 January transfer window, Engen was also linked to Olympique Lyon, but the club did not let her go. The departure of Keira Walsh during that window likely influenced the decision and it created more opportunities for players like Engen.
Marc Vivés, the Sporting Director of Women’s Football at Barcelona, was asked about Engen’s renewal after the club’s victory over Chelsea in the Women’s Champions League. Vivés stated: “We have to get used to all our players having offers. It’s a compliment that all the teams in the world want our players.”
Not starting in key matches
Ingrid Engen was not in the Starting XI in for either leg of the Women’s Champions League semi-final against Chelsea. However, she did start in the three Liga F matches leading up to the semi-finals and in the two league games that followed.
Head coach Pere Romeu mostly starts her as a center-back, often pairing her with either Paredes or Torrejón. Though, in the match against Deportivo Abanca she played in the center midfield alongside Bonmatí and Putellas. Engen is a versatile player and an excellent defender. If she moves to Olympique Lyon, she could possibly be Vanessa Gilles’ replacement. According to Kicker, the Canadian international is close to signing with FC Bayern Munich.
