It is confirmed that Greenwood sustained a MCL injury and had successful surgery. The recovery from an MCL is not as long as an ACL. It should be possible for her to go to the EURO 2025 but every recovery is different.
Manchester City celebrated another win in the Women’s Champions League. The win over Hammarby was not just positives as there are the concerns for Alex Greenwood. The Manchester City captain was stretchered off due to injury in the first half. Right after the game Gareth Taylor said:
“We’ll have to assess. Alex doesn’t normally come off unless it’s an issue, hopefully it’s nothing too bad because we could do without it, we’re missing so many players”. During his pre-match press conference Taylor was asked about Greenwood.

Pre-match press conference: Injury Update Greenwood
Update: Gareth Taylor says it’s still too soon to give an update on Alex Greenwood’s injury. He says Chloe Kelly’s absence tonight was related to the aftermath of her concussion injury from last week so she was not available. He’s hoping to do some business in January.
Ahead of the Everton game Taylor said they are still awaiting the results but the injury isn’t looking as serious as it seemed at first.
The head coach confirmed that Alex Greenwood is okay considering the circumstances. She underwent a scan and the results are expected soon after that:
“We’re awaiting a scan which is taking place today (13th of Dec), so we are just awaiting the results. Hopefully she is ok because she’s been really crucial to what we’ve done this season. Our thoughts are with Alex, and we’re hoping it’s a speedy one.”
Taylor confirmed the problem is in Greenwood’s knee.
Taylor hopes to get most of his players back in January
Greenwood is not the only injured player of course. Lauren Hemp and Vivianne Miedema are both recovering from their latest knee surgeries. Miedema is on the pitch which is good.
Naomi Layzell and Laura Coombs are not back yet. And even Chloe Kelly is yet to return. On Kelly the head coach had a positive update as she is expected to be back before the Christmas break. Same goes for Jill Roord, she is still being managed but in January her restrictions should be gone.
Then Taylor lost Bunny Shaw on Wednesday: “I’m not too sure, we’ve had multiple scans on the area that she has the issue with, we’ll have to wait and find out,” the boss said. “I don’t think we’ll see her until the new year which is a shame for us because she was in a really good vein of form.”
Young players stepping up
Because of all the injuries Taylor had to rely on his younger players. Especially with the WSL weekend coming up and of course the clash against FC Barcelona for the top spot. Murphy was among the Starting IX against Hammarby. She is just 18 years old and was Player of the Match on her first senior start.
Taylor is very happy and proud of her performance: “It’s exciting because we’ve got someone there with pace that I’ve never seen in the game, and what you can do with that is incredible. For me it’s about trying to unpick some of the stuff she’s been doing and get as much technical rhythm into her. If you have that pace in the team it causes real problems for most teams.”
We will update as soon as there is more information on Greenwood.
