Liverpool have announced the signing of goalkeeper Rafaela Borggräfe following the expiration of her contract with SC Freiburg. Borggräfe spent over a decade with Freiburg, progressing through the youth ranks before making her Frauen-Bundesliga debut in 2021. Last season, she started 19 matches, helping the team finish fifth in the league. She now joins Rachael Laws and Faye Kirby in Liverpool’s goalkeeping department.

What Rafaela Borggräfe had to say

“This means a lot,” she told Liverpoolfc.com. “This is a big club with a big history and I want to be part of that – we never walk alone. I want to have fun playing football and [I] am so happy to now be a part of the Liverpool family.

“I spent 12 years with Freiburg but I think this is the best step for me, to come to Liverpool. I’m happy – and a little bit sad to leave friends – but I want to get better and I think this is the best place for me to be here to work hard, get better and make the next big steps for my career.”

Liverpool have seen some key departures this summer, with Olivia Smith and Taylor Hinds both joining Arsenal, and other clubs reportedly showing interest in Fuka Nagano.

In the meantime, Liverpool are reinforcing their squad and have secured the signing of Kirsty Maclean from Rangers, as well as Ceri Holland’s contract extension.

Maclean made her senior debut at just 16, after rising through the youth system at Rangers. She has since made over 100 appearances for the Scottish club. In 2022, she signed her first professional contract and featured in the UEFA Women’s Champions League. That same year, she played a crucial role in Rangers’ Sky Sports Cup triumph in December.
