Manchester City celebrated another win in the Women’s Champions League. The win over Hammarby was not just positives as there are the concerns for Alex Greenwood. The Manchester City captain was stretchered off due to injury in the first half. Right after the game Gareth Taylor does not have an update yet:

“We’ll have to assess. Alex doesn’t normally come off unless it’s an issue, hopefully it’s nothing too bad because we could do without it, we’re missing so many players,” the head coach said.

Taylor hopes to get most of his players back in January

Greenwood is not the only injured player of course. Lauren Hemp and Vivianne Miedema are both recovering from their latest knee surgeries. Miedema is on the pitch which is good.

Naomi Layzell and Laura Coombs are not back yet. And even Chloe Kelly is yet to return. On Kelly the head coach had a positive update as she is expected to be back before the Christmas break. Same goes for Jill Roord, she is still being managed but in January her restrictions should be gone.

Then Taylor lost Bunny Shaw on Wednesday: “I’m not too sure, we’ve had multiple scans on the area that she has the issue with, we’ll have to wait and find out,” the boss said. “I don’t think we’ll see her until the new year which is a shame for us because she was in a really good vein of form.”

Young players stepping up

Because of all the injuries Taylor had to rely on his younger players. Especially with the WSL weekend coming up and of course the clash against FC Barcelona for the top spot. Murphy was among the Starting IX against Hammarby. She is just 18 years old and was Player of the Match on her first senior start.

Taylor is very happy and proud of her performance: “It’s exciting because we’ve got someone there with pace that I’ve never seen in the game, and what you can do with that is incredible. For me it’s about trying to unpick some of the stuff she’s been doing and get as much technical rhythm into her. If you have that pace in the team it causes real problems for most teams.”

We will update as soon as there is more information on Greenwood.
