The Netherlands vs Finland EURO 2025 Qualifications

On the 31st of May the Netherlands will host Finland during the first leg of the qualifications. The teams are in Group A1 with Italy and Norway. After Match day 1 & 2 all the teams have 3 points, so everything is still possible. The Dutch do have to win their matches if they want to increase their chance to participate in the EURO 2025.

The Netherlands and Finland met many times before, the first being in 2009 during the Women’s Euro. Finland won with 1-2. The next two meetings where in the Cyprus Cup, but both ended in a draw. It was not until the Tournoi de France in 2022 that the Dutch managed to win from Finland.

Lieke Martens ends international career

For head coach Andries Jonker this does not come as a surprise he said. “For Lieke, the Olympic Games were the ideal moment to say goodbye. When that plan fell through in February after the lost Nations League Finals, she let me know that the 2025 European Championships are too far away for her and that she would like to give her place to someone else. At my request she will be here one more time to help us as a team. She has had a fantastic career and is a great example for many young girls I hope it will be a nice farewell for her.”

Lieke Martens sent a message on social media to her fans:

Lieve Oranjefans,

I would like to let you know that the next two games with the OranjeLeeuwinnen will be my last games in Oranje. After this, I already know, I will say goodbye to you with pain in my heart. I will try to enjoy everything extra but, as always, I will give everything to achieve a great result with our team. I hope to see a lot of you next Friday!

Lots of love,

Lieke

What Lieke Martens achieved in her career so far

Martens started out with the Netherlands U15 and worked her way up in the next five years to the Netherlands U19. All her hard work paid off in 2011 when she finally made the senior team. In the next 130 years she made 158 appearances and scored 61 goals. The Oranje Leeuwinnen won the EURO 2017 and that tournament Martens was named Player of the tournament. She was also named in the Women’s EURO team of the tournament and won the Bronze Boot.

Two years later she was very successful at FC Barcelona and made the final of the World Cup 2019. The Netherlands lost the final against the USA. The following tournament was the Olympics 2020, where the Dutch lost in the quarter-finals, just like the World Cup 2023. The nearest tournament is the EURO 2025 and Martens is not going to wait for it.
