The Dutch football player signed for Chelsea last season and went back to FC Twente on loan. This time she is with The Blues and trusted by Sonia Bompastor in midfield. On match day two in the Women’s Champions League Chelsea and FC Twente faced off in De Grolsch Veste, Kaptein’s dream stadium. Chelsea won by 1-3. Afterwards, Wieke Kaptein told ESPN what it was like to be back.

Wieke Kaptein

Always room for improvement

“There were mixed feelings. Playing in a Chelsea kit and coming out of the FC Twente dressing room, that took some getting used to, yes.” Kaptein’s family and friends came out to watch her play for Chelsea: “I think there were about 40-50 people for me, a lot of family, a lot of friends and people I know, so that’s really great.”

Even though Chelsea won the match comfortably, Kaptein knows where she should have been better and what needs to improve: “If that 1-2 had gone well, I could have shot it in one go, but yeah. We were effective in front of goal, and that’s important.” Kaptein is one of the younger players in the team. She was in the starting IX with Beever-Jones, Hamano, Baltimore and Jean-Francois. Kaptein praised the level of her teammates: “I learn a lot from them, I try to pick up as much as possible from girls who already have so much experience.”

Chelsea’s chances in the Women’s Champions League

Last season Emma Hayes coached The Blues until the semi-finals, where Barcelona was too strong by 1-2 (aggravate). This time there is a new head coach: Sonia Bompastor. The Blues haven’t lost a single match so far which is promising for the rest of the season. Wieke Kaptein was asked if she thinks they can win the UWCL: “I think we can go very far with this team and win the Champions League, yes.”
