On facing Spain in a double-header: “Let’s play our game against Spain, just like we did against England, without ever forgetting that, on the other side, there are the world champions. It won’t be easy at all, they won’t make our lives easier, but we won’t make their lives easier either. We never entered any game with fear, but with total respect. We will always be emphasizing that they are the world champions. It won’t be easy at all, but we’ll never be afraid.”

On the absent players: “We want to have all the players available. The European is in three months, until then a lot can happen and I hope everyone is healthy and well. They are important casualties, but we have a strong group, strong players, and those who are here will be able to score their position.”

Montse Tomé on facing Portugal: “These are two important games for us, we started the Nations League with the aim of being first in the group. Portugal is a very competitive team. They have been with the same coach for many years and have been reinventing themselves. Most recently, in the Nations League, they draw against England and earned three points against Belgium. 

“We know this team very well although personally I have not faced it. The team is a mixture of players who play in different leagues, five play in this league and we know them. We know the Portuguese league, we have Martín-Prieto, and we have worked hard in this league.”

Portugal vs. Spain: Previous Meetings & Stats

Portugal and Spain ahve previously faced off on three major occasions. The first two meetings took place during the Women’s EURO qualifiers in 2015 and 2016, with Spain winning both games convincingly (2-0 and 1-4). Their third encounter was during the EURO 2017 group stage, where Spain secured their only group-stage victory, advancing to the knockouts on goal difference.
