Aston Villa vs. Arsenal: Team News & Possible Line-ups

The possible line-ups are derived from previous match days. We take into consideration how strong the opponents are, what players are injured and of course team news before the match.

Team News Aston Villa

Aston Villa will be without Paula Tomás for the remainder of the season. The defender suffered a hip injury during the international break and underwent successful surgery.

Lucy Parker (leg), Lucy Staniforth (ankle), Sarah Mayling (ankle) and Gabi Nunes (back) are all ruled out for the match against Arsenal.

Rachel Corsie is back in the matchday squad.

What the coach has to say:

Natalia Arroyo on facing Arsenal: “They have an amazing squad and they are building or keeping with this idea of competing and being strong everyday. So, I expect a good version of Arsenal and that means we will suffer at some point, because they attack amazingly. They are in my opninion, the best team when it comes to creating, and having fluidity.

“It will be tough for us to keep this high press, to stay compact, but we will have our chances. Maybe in the counterattack, or maybe if we feel brave enough. That’s the moment where we need to celebrate that we are not in relegation problems anymore. So, be brave enough to have the ball, make them run, make them suffer a little bit and let’s see if we can compete against one of the top teams of the league.”

On playing the top teams: “We can play against Chelsea, Man City, Man United, teams that are dominating the league, and we struggle in different games. Against Chelsea we were compact, in the way we will need against Arsenal. I am quite happy with that performance. Against Man City the same, we defended quite well, not allowing them to have a lot of chances.

“We know that even if we are defending well, they will have one [chance] and they just need one. They don’t necessarily need 100. That’s part of being successful in the game.”

Team News Arsenal

RenĂ©e Slegers had a very positive squad update before the Women’s Champions League semi-final against Lyon “everyone will be available for Sunday, hopefully”, the head coach said. That meant Lotte Wubben-Moy and Van Domselaar returned after injury.

Slegers confirmed there are no changes to the squad: “No, same availability.”

What the coach has to say:

RenĂ©e Slegers on preparing for Aston Villa: “Yeah, so individualisation yesterday with regards to what the players needed from a recovery versus training perspective. So that’s what we did yesterday, but it was also an important moment to get together and acknowledge what we did. So great energy, togetherness and that was important for us. I think you want to acknowledge the emotions and not neglect them and today has been all about the preparation for Villa and like I said before, the balance of using those emotions and the momentum that we have, but also regulate that because we need to be focused and ready for Villa tomorrow.”

“It’s a good team. They’ve secured their spot in the league for next year. So I guess they’re happy with that. They’ve changed their structure a little bit. Of course, they come from two wins in the league and I think they will be free in the way they will try to take on the game tomorrow. So we are very aware of what they can bring to the game and where they come from. So we need to be 100% focused and concentrated on what we need to do tomorrow.”

On balancing the WSL and UWCL: “It’s not conflicting because we had two objectives for the block and that was going to the final and do our job in the WSL by getting four out of four. So we’ve done one now and now it’s Aston Villa tomorrow and all we want to do is get three points tomorrow because we want to keep the pressure on in the WSL.”

  • McCabe
  • Catley
  • Wubben-Moy
  • Reid
  • Caldentey
  • Pelova
  • Cooney-Cross

Can they build on this momentum and secure vital points in the WSL? Chelsea are still six points ahead of Arsenal and qualification for next season’s UWCL is not yet guaranteed.
