Moving to a new country can be one of the biggest adjustments in a footballer’s career. Charli Grant will not have that problem. When Malmö FF announced the signing of the Australian international from Tottenham Hotspur, they secured a player with experience at international level, Women’s Super League level and, perhaps just as importantly, a player who already understands Swedish football.
That familiarity makes this transfer slightly different from many of Malmö’s recent additions. Grant is not arriving in Sweden to discover the league. She is returning to a football environment that has already shaped her career.
Sweden Was Where Her European Career Began
Before establishing herself in England, Grant’s first move abroad took her from Adelaide United to FC Rosengård in 2021. The transition could hardly have gone better. She won both the Damallsvenskan title and the Svenska Cupen during her time in Malmö, gaining experience in one of Scandinavia’s strongest teams while still in the early stages of her career.
Opportunities can be difficult to find at clubs competing for trophies every season, however, and a loan move to Vittsjö GIK gave Grant something every young player needs: regular minutes. What followed proved to be an important turning point.
Playing as an attacking full-back, she became one of Vittsjö’s most influential players during the 2023 season, contributing two goals and four assists in 23 league appearances. The performances earned her a permanent move and, before long, attention from abroad. Tottenham completed her signing in January 2024.
The WSL Experience
The Women’s Super League remains one of the most competitive leagues in the world, particularly for defenders. Every week brings a different challenge. Wide players are quicker, attacks are more varied and mistakes are punished more consistently.
Grant spent two-and-a-half seasons navigating that environment, making 35 appearances for Tottenham while continuing to establish herself within the Australian national team setup. During that period she also added another layer to her game.
Speaking after joining Malmö, Grant highlighted decision-making and patience in possession as areas that developed during her time in England. Those qualities often separate players who can thrive at elite level from those who simply possess the physical tools to get there.
Why Malmö Makes Sense
Malmö are no longer the ambitious club Grant remembers from her previous spell in Sweden. When she first arrived in the country, Malmö FF were still climbing through the divisions. Their rapid rise has transformed them into one of the most ambitious projects in Scandinavian women’s football.
Grant referenced that growth herself, describing how she repeatedly heard about the club’s ambitions while playing elsewhere in Sweden and how impressed she was by the facilities and infrastructure when she visited.
That ambition has also become increasingly visible in recruitment. Signing an Australian international with Damallsvenskan experience, WSL experience and 38 senior international caps reflects a club preparing not just to compete in the league but to establish itself among Sweden’s leading sides.
Grant’s profile fits that objective. She can operate on either flank, brings pace and athleticism, and arrives with experience of winning trophies in Sweden and competing against some of the world’s best players in England.
Just as valuable may be the fact that she already knows what it takes to succeed in the Damallsvenskan. There will be no learning curve when it comes to the league, the culture or the demands of Swedish football.
Instead, Malmö are getting a player returning with a broader perspective, more experience and a stronger résumé than when she first arrived in the country five years ago.
