Inter have extended Irene Santi’s contract until 30 June 2028, keeping a midfielder whose history with the club stretches from Serie B to a second-place finish in Serie A.
The 26-year-old’s previous agreement was due to expire this summer. She made 12 appearances during the 2025-26 season, starting five matches and playing 436 minutes while scoring once.
Those numbers confirm that Santi was primarily a rotation player. Her renewal is significant because Inter have decided that their attempt to close an 11-point gap to champions AS Roma requires continuity beyond the regular starting side.

From Serie B to a Serie A Title Challenge
Santi’s history with Inter began before the women’s team reached the Italian top flight. When Inter took over the club’s sporting title in the summer of 2018, Santi continued her development in the Nerazzurri shirt. She was part of the team that won the Serie B championship and officially made her Serie A debut for Inter in November 2019.
A season on loan at Hellas Verona interrupted that journey, but she returned to Inter in July 2021 and has since taken her number of appearances beyond 50.
Santi has consequently witnessed several versions of the team. She was present during the climb out of Serie B, returned after gaining experience elsewhere and remained as Inter developed into a side capable of finishing second in Serie A. Her new contract allows that relationship to continue for another two years.
What 436 Minutes Tell Us
Irene Santi was not one of Inter’s most-used players last season. Five starts and 436 minutes across 12 appearances placed her firmly within the rotation. That makes the renewal more interesting than the announcement initially suggests.
Inter are not extending the contract of an automatic starter whose importance is visible every weekend. They are keeping a midfielder trusted to enter the side when required and cover more than one central role.
Santi can operate in central or defensive midfield, giving Inter an option behind their regular starters without requiring a new player to adjust to the team and club.
The decision does not necessarily mean her position will remain unchanged. A contract until 2028 also gives Santi the opportunity to compete for more minutes after a season in which her involvement was limited.
Building Beyond the Starting Eleven
Inter finished second in 2025-26, but the final table also showed the size of their next challenge. AS Roma ended the season 11 points ahead of them.
Closing that gap will require more than improving the strongest possible starting team. Inter must also decide which players can support a title challenge across an entire campaign.
Santi’s renewal provides one answer. Her value comes from knowing the club, understanding different midfield responsibilities and accepting a role that did not always bring regular starts last season.
That does not make the next two years comfortable. As Inter’s ambitions increase, every member of the squad must show they can contribute at the level required to challenge Roma.
Can Santi Rise With Inter Again?
Irene Santi has already grown alongside Inter once. She followed the club from Serie B into Serie A and remained part of the squad as it developed into the closest challenger to Roma.
Inter are no longer trying to establish themselves in the top division. They are trying to turn second place into a championship, and that ambition raises expectations for regular starters and rotation players alike.
Santi’s renewal keeps one of the club’s longest-running development stories alive. Whether she remains a supporting figure or grows into a more prominent midfielder will show if she can take the next step as quickly as Inter now intend to.
