Chelsea winger Johanna Rytting Kaneryd could be set for a new challenge this summer, with reports in Sweden suggesting the 29-year-old is considering her future despite still having a year remaining on her contract.
According to Sportbladet, the Sweden international is expected to leave the Women’s Super League champions following the conclusion of the current international window. While no destination has yet emerged, Rytting Kaneryd admitted she is open to exploring her options as she looks to rediscover her best form.
“Right now I have a contract with Chelsea and my focus is on the national team camp,” she said ahead of Sweden’s meeting with Denmark. “But of course, I want to play football and I love playing football. We’ll see what happens in the future.”
Why Johanna Rytting Kaneryd Could Leave Chelsea
Rytting Kaneryd joined Chelsea in 2022 and quickly established herself as one of the Women’s Super League‘s most dangerous wide players. Her direct dribbling, pace and ability to create chances made her an important option in attack during Chelsea’s domestic success.
However, the 2025-26 season proved more challenging.
The Swedish international described the campaign as one of the toughest of her career, citing fitness setbacks and difficulties reaching her usual performance levels.
“It has definitely been one of the toughest seasons,” she said. “Mentally and in terms of my own performances.”
For a player entering what is often considered the peak years of a footballer’s career, regular minutes are likely to be a key factor in any decision regarding her future.
What Rytting Kaneryd Adds to a Team
Even after a difficult season, Rytting Kaneryd remains one of Europe’s most experienced and effective wide attackers.
The winger offers explosive pace, strong one-versus-one ability and relentless work rate both in and out of possession. She is equally capable of stretching defences from the touchline or cutting inside to create opportunities in the final third.
Her experience at the highest level is another major asset. Alongside multiple Women’s Super League title races with Chelsea, she has been a regular for Sweden at major international tournaments.
For clubs competing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League, that combination of experience, versatility and attacking threat could make her an attractive option this summer.
Where Is She in Her Career?
At 29, Rytting Kaneryd finds herself at an important crossroads.
She remains firmly in her prime years and should have several seasons at the highest level ahead of her. Rather than seeking a final move, any transfer would likely be driven by a desire to play a more prominent role and regain the consistency that made her one of Sweden’s standout performers.
The timing is also significant with the FIFA Women’s World Cup 2027 cycle now underway. Maintaining regular club football could prove crucial as Sweden build towards another major tournament.
What Could Be Next?
While Rytting Kaneryd acknowledged that the Women’s Super League remains one of the most attractive competitions in the world, she also stated that she is “open to alternatives.”
That leaves the door open to a variety of possibilities across Europe. A move to another Women’s Super League club could offer a fresh start without leaving England, while leading clubs in Spain, Germany or France may also view the Sweden international as an experienced addition capable of making an immediate impact.
For now, her focus remains on Sweden’s ongoing international commitments. But after four years at Chelsea, all signs suggest Johanna Rytting Kaneryd could be one of the most intriguing names to watch during the summer transfer window.
