Chelsea have extended 18-year-old midfielder Lola Brown’s contract until 2029 following her return from a season-long loan at Crystal Palace.
Brown made three competitive senior appearances for Chelsea before joining Palace and later provided three assists in the match that secured the Eagles’ promotion to the Women’s Super League. She has also been selected for England’s squad for the Under-20 Women’s World Cup in September.
The new three-year agreement is Brown’s second professional contract. Her first was signed in November 2024, when she was 17.

Brown’s progress through the Chelsea academy
Lola Brown joined Chelsea during the 2019/20 season, entering the academy at under-12 level despite being only 10. She was named Chelsea Women’s Academy Under-18 Player of the Year for 2023/24 and signed her first professional contract several months later.
Her senior debut followed in November 2024, when she came on against Celtic in the Women’s Champions League at Stamford Bridge. Brown subsequently featured against Twente before making her WSL debut as a substitute in a 2-0 victory over Tottenham in May 2025.
Those appearances gave her early exposure to Sonia Bompastor’s first team, but not enough football to make regular senior development possible. Chelsea therefore sent her to Crystal Palace for the 2025/26 season.
Three assists in Palace’s promotion-clinching win
Brown’s loan did not begin as planned. An injury restricted her involvement during the first half of the campaign, and she did not return to action until January. Her most significant contribution arrived on the final day of the WSL2 season.
Palace needed to beat Portsmouth to guarantee automatic promotion but went into half-time level at 1-1. Brown came on for the second half and provided three assists as Jo Potter’s side won 6-1.
She was named Player of the Match, while the victory returned Palace to the WSL at the first attempt. The performance was important because it demonstrated how Brown could affect a senior match with promotion at stake. It also gave her a more substantial role than the short substitute appearances she had previously received at Chelsea.
Although injury reduced the total amount of football she played during the loan, Brown returned to Chelsea with experience of a full-time senior environment and a direct contribution to Palace’s promotion.
Her first Chelsea goal requires clarification
Brown scored her first goal in Chelsea colours against London City Lionesses at the World Sevens tournament following the end of her Palace loan. That goal was recorded in the seven-a-side tournament rather than a standard competitive Chelsea fixture. It explains why Brown identified scoring her first professional Chelsea goal as one of her targets after signing the new contract.
She said: “Now I want to win as many trophies as possible, and on a personal level I want to score my first professional goal as a Chelsea player.”
The contract does not confirm her immediate role
Chelsea’s decision protects Lola Brown’s longer-term future, but the club have not announced whether she will remain with the first team throughout 2026/27 or leave on another loan.
A contract extension demonstrates that Chelsea value her development. It does not guarantee the number of minutes she will receive in a squad containing established senior internationals.
Brown has already experienced the first three stages of Chelsea’s academy pathway: youth football, a senior debut and a developmental loan. The next stage requires either regular involvement under Bompastor or another loan that offers a clear increase in playing time.
Her performance for Palace suggests that she has moved beyond academy football. The remaining assessment is whether Chelsea can now provide enough competitive opportunities at first-team level.
Under-20 World Cup comes next
Brown has represented England at under-16, under-17, under-19 and under-20 level. She captained the under-20 team against Japan in June and has been included in the squad for September’s Under-20 Women’s World Cup. England have been drawn in Group B alongside Brazil, Tanzania and Canada. The tournament will provide Lola Brown with further high-level minutes before her club role becomes clearer.
Chelsea have secured her contract until 2029 because her academy performances, senior debut and Palace loan show continued progress. Her next target is now measurable: regular competitive football and a first goal for Chelsea in an official senior competition.
