Crystal Palace have added another layer of WSL experience to their rebuilt squad by signing Molly Bartrip from Tottenham Hotspur on a three-year contract.
The 30-year-old centre-back arrives with more than 150 appearances in England’s top division and a decade of senior football behind her. Yet the most valuable part of the deal may be the familiarity that already exists between Bartrip and Palace manager Jo Potter.
The pair spent more than two years together at Reading. As Palace prepare to return to the Women’s Super League, Potter is placing an important part of her defence in the hands of somebody whose personality and game she already understands.

A Defender Potter Already Knows
Molly Bartrip made her senior Reading debut in 2014 and went on to play 100 competitive matches for the club. Part of that period was spent alongside Potter, long before their paths crossed again as player and manager at Crystal Palace. That shared history should reduce some of the uncertainty that usually accompanies a new signing.
Potter knows how Bartrip responds in a dressing room, how she communicates on the pitch and what she can offer when a match places the defence under sustained pressure. Bartrip, meanwhile, already understands the standards and personality of her new head coach.
For a newly assembled squad preparing to compete at a higher level, that mutual trust can help accelerate the process of building defensive organisation. “Molly brings WSL pedigree to the club,” Potter said. “She adds real quality and composure to our back line.”
Experience With a Specific Purpose
Bartrip joined Tottenham in July 2021 and became a regular presence in their defence across five seasons in North London.
Combined with her century of appearances for Reading, that spell takes her beyond 150 WSL matches. Palace are therefore recruiting somebody familiar with the weekly demands of the division they are returning to.
That experience matters because promoted teams rarely have the luxury of settling gradually. Defensive relationships must develop while facing some of the strongest attacks in the country, and mistakes that went unpunished at a lower level can quickly become decisive.
Bartrip’s composure should help Palace manage those moments. Her role will not simply involve defending the penalty area; she will also be expected to provide stability while Potter establishes how her new-look team wants to play.
Palace Are Building a WSL-Ready Core
Molly Bartrip follows Sierra Enge, Bethany England, Teyah Goldie, Lexi Lloyd-Smith and Shannon O’Brien into the club this summer.
The collection of arrivals suggests Palace are balancing different requirements. Goldie and Enge offer room for development, while England, O’Brien and Bartrip arrive with experience of competing in the WSL.
Bartrip’s signing is especially relevant because defensive cohesion can be difficult to manufacture quickly. A three-year contract indicates that Palace see her as part of more than a short-term attempt to survive their first season back.
She can help establish the structure around which the defence develops, while providing a reference point for teammates with less top-flight experience.
The Next Task Is Building the Partnership
Molly Bartrip described Palace’s facilities and the welcome she received after completing the move, but her real work begins when the new defensive unit takes shape.
Her individual experience gives Palace a stronger starting point. It cannot guarantee that a collection of new signings will immediately function as a cohesive team.
That will be Potter’s central challenge before the season begins: turning familiarity with one trusted defender into organisation across an entire back line.
Palace have recruited a player who already knows what the WSL demands. The next question is how quickly the players around her can learn those lessons too.
