Canadian international Shelina Zadorsky has completed a move to AFC Toronto, bringing more than a decade of elite-level experience back to her home country as the Northern Super League continues to establish itself.
The defender arrives after spells in the Women’s Super League, NWSL, Sweden and Australia, becoming one of the most high-profile players to join Canada’s new professional women’s league.
For AFC Toronto, the signing adds leadership, experience and international pedigree. For Zadorsky, it represents something more personal.
After leaving Canada as a teenager to pursue her football career abroad, she is returning home to help shape the future of the women’s game in the country she has represented for more than a decade.
Why This Move Feels Different
Most transfers are judged by trophies, salaries or league rankings. This one is harder to measure. At 33, Shelina Zadorsky has already achieved almost everything a player could hope for. She has played in multiple World Cups, represented Canada at three Olympic Games and was part of the squad that won Olympic gold at Tokyo 2020.
She has also competed in some of the strongest leagues in women’s football. There is little left for her to prove. That is what makes this decision significant.
Rather than extending her career overseas, Zadorsky has chosen to become part of the Northern Super League’s foundation years, joining a competition that is still writing its first chapters.
A Career Built Across Four Countries
Few Canadian players have accumulated the breadth of experience Zadorsky brings to AFC Toronto. After beginning her professional journey following a successful collegiate career at the University of Michigan, she built a career that took her across multiple continents.
Her club career included spells with:
- Perth Glory
- Vittsjö GIK
- Washington Spirit
- Orlando Pride
- Tottenham Hotspur
- West Ham United
Every stop added a different layer to her game. Whether competing in Sweden’s Damallsvenskan, the NWSL or England’s Women’s Super League, Zadorsky established a reputation as a composed and dependable defender capable of organizing those around her.
That experience is exactly what AFC Toronto believe can help accelerate the development of one of the league’s youngest squads.
The Leadership AFC Toronto Are Getting
While Shelina Zadorsky’s international résumé naturally attracts attention, her leadership qualities may prove even more important. AFC Toronto’s technical staff repeatedly referenced her ability to guide younger players and influence standards throughout the club.
That should come as little surprise. Throughout her career, Zadorsky has been viewed as one of Canada’s most respected figures, earning more than 100 international caps while becoming a regular presence within the national team leadership group.
Her influence has never been limited to performances on the pitch. The defender completed a psychology degree at Michigan and later earned an MBA while continuing her professional career overseas, demonstrating the professionalism and discipline that have defined her journey.
For a new club still establishing its culture, those qualities can be just as valuable as defensive ability.
The End Of An Important West Ham Chapter
Zadorsky arrives in Toronto following an influential spell at West Ham United. Initially joining on loan from Tottenham Hotspur in January 2024 before making the move permanent, she became one of the club’s most important figures over the following two-and-a-half years.
Across 50 appearances, she provided consistency, leadership and experience during a period of transition. Her impact was recognised when she was named vice-captain ahead of the 2024-25 season, while her off-field contributions earned her the club’s Players’ Project Award during the 2025-26 campaign.
When West Ham announced her departure this summer, it marked the end of one of the most significant chapters of the club’s recent history. Now a new one begins.

Zadorsky will become eligible for selection when the Northern Super League transfer window opens on July 20. Her arrival gives AFC Toronto one of the league’s most experienced defenders and one of Canadian football’s most recognisable figures.
But this transfer may ultimately be remembered for something bigger than football. As one of the country’s most decorated players, Zadorsky could have continued her career almost anywhere.
Instead, she chose to come home. At a time when Canadian women’s football is building something new, that decision feels every bit as important as the signing itself.
