VfL Wolfburg Take The Lead

VfL Wolfsburg claimed a narrow 1–0 victory over OL Lyonnes in the first leg of their UEFA Women’s Champions League quarter-final, gaining a crucial advantage ahead of the return fixture in France.

One of the competition’s most frequent matchups delivered another intense chapter, as Wolfsburg combined clinical finishing with disciplined defending to edge past the eight-time champions.

The Wolves started brightly, immediately testing the Lyon defence, but the visitors quickly imposed themselves through a high press. Their early pressure nearly paid off when a misplaced pass from Johannes allowed Lindsey Heaps to intercept, only for a vital defensive intervention to deny a clear chance.

Beerensteyn Scores

Despite Lyon controlling possession, it was Wolfsburg who struck first in the 14th minute. A defensive miscommunication allowed Lineth Beerensteyn to pounce, racing through on goal before her shot took a decisive deflection off Damaris, wrong-footing Endler and finding the net.

OL Lyonnes responded by increasing the intensity, pinning Wolfsburg deep and limiting their ability to build from the back. However, the hosts remained dangerous on the counter. Beerensteyn came close to doubling the lead with a header, while Endemann’s driving run set up Peddemors, whose effort was well saved by Endler.

Dumornay had OL Lyonnes’ best chance of the first half but fired over, leaving Wolfsburg to take a 1–0 lead into the break.

Looking for the Equalizer

Lyon resumed the second half with renewed urgency, nearly equalising within minutes as a goal-line clearance from Minge preserved the lead. Dumornay was again at the centre of the action shortly after, narrowly missing the target following a swift OL Lyonnes counter-attack.

The pressure continued to build around the hour mark when Schrader and Brand combined to carve open the Wolfsburg defence, only for the woodwork to deny Lyon a deserved equaliser.

In the closing stages, Wolfsburg were largely confined to defending, with OL Lyonnes creating wave after wave of attacks in search of a breakthrough. A last second header, safely gathered by Johannes, summed up the visitors’ frustration.

Despite Lyon’s dominance and numerous chances, Wolfsburg held firm to secure a hard-fought 1–0 win. The result gives the German side a slender advantage heading into the second leg, where OL Lyonnes will have home advantage and another opportunity to turn the tie around.
