Newcastle United have completed the permanent signing of Scotland striker Martha Thomas from Tottenham Hotspur for an undisclosed fee. The 30-year-old leaves Spurs after scoring 13 goals in 66 appearances, having spent the second half of last season on loan at Liverpool.
Thomas arrives shortly after Newcastle signed Leanne Kiernan from Liverpool. Their qualities suggest manager Tanya Oxtoby is not collecting similar forwards but assembling different ways to threaten WSL 2 defences.
Kiernan wants to attack the space behind. Thomas can provide the physical presence, link play and work rate needed to bring the rest of Newcastle’s attack into matches.

Why Thomas Offers Something Different
Oxtoby described Martha Thomas as a physical striker capable of scoring different types of goals while also linking and creating play. That combination could make her central to how Newcastle move the ball through attacking areas.
A physical centre-forward can occupy defenders and provide a target when a team cannot progress cleanly. If Thomas holds possession and connects with teammates, runners around her receive more time to attack the spaces she helps create.
That is where Leanne Kiernan’s arrival from Liverpool becomes particularly relevant. Kiernan describes herself as a quick attacker who wants to run behind defensive lines.
Thomas could come towards the ball while Kiernan moves in the opposite direction. Newcastle could also use them separately, choosing between greater physical presence and direct speed depending on the opponent.
Oxtoby now has a tactical decision instead of one automatic attacking solution.

Martha Thomas joined Tottenham after two seasons with Manchester United and went on to score 13 times across 66 appearances. Her final Spurs campaign included a second-half loan at Liverpool, temporarily moving her away from North London before the permanent Newcastle transfer.
At 30, Thomas needs a defined role and the opportunity to apply the experience accumulated across several WSL clubs.
Her earlier spell with West Ham produced 10 goals in 33 matches after she arrived in England from French side Le Havre. Before moving to Europe, Thomas developed through the American collegiate system with the Charlotte 49ers.
Those different environments have shaped a striker accustomed to adapting. Newcastle must now give her enough continuity to make that adaptability productive.
Scotland Show What Thomas Can Contribute
Thomas has scored 21 goals in 52 appearances for Scotland. That record reinforces her ability to carry a scoring responsibility, but her contribution cannot be reduced to finishing. Thomas spoke about team culture and her desire to raise standards both in the dressing room and on the pitch.
Thomas must understand when to hold the ball, when to create space and how to connect with the runners around her. Kiernan and Newcastle’s other attackers must learn how to respond to those movements.
Newcastle Must Turn Recruitment Into Improvement
Martha Thomas and Kiernan have played in the WSL, represented their countries and scored at several clubs. Newcastle now possess considerably more senior experience in attack than their sixth-place finish might suggest.
Thomas must show she can become a consistent focal point. Kiernan must rediscover the form that powered Liverpool to promotion. Oxtoby must decide whether their contrasting qualities work best together or as alternatives.
Newcastle have recruited the components of a promotion-level attack. The coming season will determine whether they can make those components move as one.
