Freddie Cardy reports that Arsenal right-back Laura Wienroither is set to leave the club this summer. The Austrian international spent the second half of last season on loan at Manchester City, where she made five appearances and also featured at the World Sevens Tournament. Arsenal have already reinforced their defensive options, bringing in Jenna Nighswonger during the January transfer window and Taylor Hinds from Liverpool this summer.
Laura Wienroither Career Highlights
Wienroither began her career in Austria with TSV Frankenburg, before moving on to Union Kleinmünchen, SV Neulengbach, and later SKN St. Pölten. In 2018, she made her first move abroad, signing with TSG 1899 Hoffenheim in Germany. During her time there, the club secured a third-place finish in the Frauen-Bundesliga, and her performances earned her a transfer to Arsenal.
Shortly after joining the Gunners, Wienroither suffered a serious ACL injury, which sidelined her for a significant period. In the meantime, Arsenal signed Emily Fox, and head coach Renée Slegers now favors Katie Reid as the backup in that position. As of now, her next destination remains unknown.
More Arsenal Women’s Transfer News
Arsenal have announced the signing of Canadian international Olivia Smith. She joins from Liverpool for a reported fee of over £1 million and has signed a contract running until 2029. Liverpool have included a sell-on clause to benefit from any future transfer. If the reported fee is accurate, Smith’s move would become the most expensive transfer in women’s football history, surpassing the previous record set by Naomi Girma, who joined Chelsea in the January 2025 window. How long will the record stand this time?
Olivia Smith Career Highlights
Smith signed for Liverpool in July 2024 after an outstanding debut professional season with Sporting CP in Portugal, where she scored 16 goals and provided 9 assists in 26 appearances. Her performances earned her the awards for both Best Young Player and Revelation Player in the Portuguese league.
At Liverpool, she made 25 appearances across all competitions, scoring nine goals. She was voted the club’s Player of the Season and was nominated for the WSL Rising Star Award.
Internationally, the 20-year-old has already made a big impact. She debuted for Canada in 2019 at just 15 years old, featured at the 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup and the 2024 CONCACAF Gold Cup, and was named Young Player of the Tournament at the latter.
