Manchester City recovered from two goals down to earn a 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich in their opening match of the 2026/27 UEFA Women’s Champions League league phase. Bayern dominated the first half and established a 2-0 lead through Giulia Gwinn and a Kerstin Casparij own goal. Beth Mead pulled one back just before half-time before Ena Mahmutovic saved Khadija Shaw’s penalty after the break.
City improved significantly in the second half and former Bayern defender Carlotta Wamser completed the comeback with an 86th-minute equaliser.

Bayern dominate the first half
Bayern immediately put Manchester City under pressure and almost opened the scoring when a cross towards the far post found Klara Bühl in space, but she could not turn the ball towards goal.
The breakthrough arrived in the 11th minute. Linda Dallmann drove through midfield before finding Gwinn on the right, and the Bayern captain advanced before producing an excellent finish into the far corner beyond Ayaka Yamashita.
City struggled to play through Bayern’s pressure. Forward passes were quickly intercepted, the visitors lost too many physical battles and Bayern were particularly dangerous when attacking quickly after turnovers.
Their dominance produced a second goal in the 28th minute. Pernille Harder’s delivery caused problems inside the area and Casparij’s attempted clearance ended up in her own net.
City had offered little going forward, but they found an important response just before half-time. Casparij’s cross was blocked by Viggósdóttir and the deflection rolled across the area to Mead, who finished at the far post to reduce the deficit to 2-1.
Shaw denied as City improve
Manchester City saw more of the ball after the restart, although Bayern remained the more threatening side early in the second half.
The visitors were then handed a major opportunity when Mahmutovic mistimed her attempt to clear the ball and brought down Aoba Fujino inside the penalty area. Shaw stepped up, but Mahmutovic made an excellent save to immediately make amends for conceding the penalty.
Andrée Jeglertz then introduced Mary Fowler and Laura Blindkilde Brown for Shaw and Sam Coffey. City became more progressive following the changes and gradually pushed Bayern onto the back foot.
Grace Clinton replaced Mead in the 75th minute, while Fujino went close to an equaliser when she drove into the area and sent an effort narrowly wide.
Wamser completes the comeback
City’s pressure was finally rewarded in the 86th minute. Clinton found Hemp inside the Bayern area and, after Blindkilde Brown became involved in the move, the ball reached Wamser. The former Bayern Munich player kept her finish low and found the bottom corner to make it 2-2.
Bayern still had a late opportunity to restore their lead when Harder broke forward and found Edna Imade inside the area, but the substitute dragged her effort wide.
Manchester City therefore left Munich with a point after a match of two very different halves. Bayern were comfortably superior before the break, but Mead’s goal kept City in the contest and Jeglertz’s side grew increasingly dangerous in the second half.
