Chelsea have completed the signing of Melvine Malard from Manchester United on a four-year contract, adding one of Europe’s most experienced attacking players to an already formidable squad.
At first glance, the move gives the Women’s Super League champions another proven forward with Champions League pedigree. Look closer, however, and a different story emerges.
This is also a reunion between Malard and Sonia Bompastor, the coach who first recognised her talent as a 14-year-old and helped shape her journey from Lyon’s academy to becoming a French international and UEFA Women’s Champions League winner. For Chelsea, that existing relationship may prove just as valuable as Malard’s impressive record on the pitch.

Why Sonia Bompastor Wanted Her Again
Few coaches know a player as well as Bompastor knows Malard. Before either had reached Chelsea, Bompastor was responsible for recruiting young players into Lyon’s academy. After spotting Malard during a regional tournament at Clairefontaine, she convinced the teenager and her family to leave Réunion Island for mainland France and join one of Europe’s most successful clubs.
Years later, Bompastor handed Melvine Malard one of the biggest opportunities of her career by selecting her to start the 2022 UEFA Women’s Champions League final against Barcelona. Lyon won 3-1, and Malard played a key role in one of the club’s greatest European victories.
Chelsea are therefore not taking a gamble on an unfamiliar player. Bompastor already understands Malard’s strengths, personality and areas for development, reducing many of the uncertainties that usually accompany a major transfer.

Her ambition mirrors that of her new club. Speaking after signing, Malard made it clear that winning the Champions League was one of her primary objectives, recognising it as the competition Chelsea are determined to conquer.
For a squad already packed with international quality, adding another player with genuine Champions League-winning experience could prove invaluable when the knockout rounds arrive.
Why It Matters
Chelsea have not simply strengthened an already impressive attack. They have reunited a coach with a player whose development she has influenced for more than a decade.
That familiarity removes much of the uncertainty surrounding a major transfer and gives Malard an environment where she can immediately understand what is expected of her.
