Eintracht Frankfurt have completed the permanent signing of Danish midfielder Sofie Lundgaard from Liverpool for an undisclosed fee. The 24-year-old has signed a contract until 30 June 2029 and will wear Frankfurt’s number six shirt.
Lundgaard leaves Liverpool after three and a half years, during which she made 42 appearances across all competitions. Her progress on Merseyside was severely disrupted by two major ligament injuries and a more recent ankle problem.
Frankfurt are offering her the chance to rebuild that momentum within a midfield role that could suit both sides of her game.

Why Frankfurt Have Committed Until 2029
Sofie Lundgaard’s recent appearance record would make a shorter agreement understandable. Frankfurt have instead offered a contract covering the next three seasons. That commitment reflects how long the club have followed her.
Frankfurt first encountered Lundgaard while she was playing for Fortuna Hjørring during a Women’s Champions League qualifying tournament in 2022. Sporting director Babett Peter explained that the German club have continued monitoring her career and believe this is the right moment to work together.
“As a club, we have followed Sofie and her development for a very long time,” Peter said. “Now was the perfect moment to push ahead and make a collaboration happen.”
Frankfurt are not signing solely on the basis of Lundgaard’s limited minutes over the past two campaigns. They are looking back to the wider body of work that made her one of Scandinavia’s notable young midfielders before injuries interrupted her progress.
Liverpool Progress Stopped by Injuries
Lundgaard joined Liverpool in January 2023 and made 31 appearances during her opening 18 months in England.
That early involvement suggested she was moving towards a stable place within the squad. Two serious ligament injuries subsequently changed the direction of her Liverpool spell, while an ankle issue caused another setback. She featured only 11 times across her final two seasons.
Those absences made it difficult for Lundgaard to build rhythm or turn her initial promise into a defined long-term role. Liverpool now receive an undisclosed fee, while the midfielder gains a fresh start away from the environment in which her progress repeatedly stalled.
Sofie Lundgaard says she is currently feeling fit and ready to commit fully to her new club. “I’ve had a few setbacks through injuries recently, but I feel very good now and I’m ready to give 100 per cent,” she said.
A Midfielder Who Can Play as a Six or Eight
Frankfurt value Lundgaard’s ability to operate in multiple central-midfield roles. Peter identified her as someone capable of playing as a defensive No.6 or further forward as a No.8. Her defensive stability gives the team protection, while her comfort in possession allows her to contribute to progressive phases of play.
That flexibility is useful across a demanding season, but it also gives Lundgaard an opportunity to establish herself without being restricted to a single position.
She described herself as a hard-working player who likes having the ball while remaining conscious of her defensive responsibilities.
The balance is important. Frankfurt are not recruiting an exclusively destructive midfielder or a player who needs to be protected without the ball. They believe she can connect the defensive and attacking phases, giving head coach Niko Arnautis different options depending on the opponent.
Her Danish Career Shows the Player Frankfurt Hope to Recover
Lundgaard made her professional debut for Aalborg at 16 before moving to Fortuna Hjørring six months later. She played 100 competitive matches for Fortuna, scoring 13 goals and providing four assists. Her time there included a Danish league title and two domestic cups.
Lundgaard also represented Denmark 38 times across the youth levels, scoring 13 goals.
Those figures demonstrate that she was already accumulating significant responsibility before leaving Denmark. Her move to Liverpool was supposed to continue that progression at WSL level, but injuries prevented the sequence from developing cleanly.
Frankfurt’s task is not to introduce Lundgaard to senior football. It is to help her recover the continuity she had before moving to England.
A Fresh Start With Scandinavian Support
Sofie Lundgaard pointed to Frankfurt’s ambition as a central reason for accepting the move. She also noted that the presence of several Scandinavian players should help her settle, particularly during the opening weeks of her first season in Germany.
The club have promised support both on and off the pitch, but the sporting expectations remain significant. Lundgaard must regain match sharpness, stay available and compete for minutes in a midfield containing established players.
Her three-year contract provides time for that process without removing the need to contribute. Liverpool saw Lundgaard’s first 31 appearances disrupted by injuries before her role could fully take shape. Frankfurt have now placed a longer-term bet on what happens if the interruptions finally stop.
