Ella Touon is only 22, but her career has already taken her through Germany, Austria and back again. Now, Ajax have made her the latest addition to a squad being reshaped ahead of the 2026/27 season.
The Amsterdam club have signed the Switzerland international from FC Köln on a two-year contract running until June 2028. Touon spent the second half of last season on loan at SGS Essen, the club where her senior career began, before Ajax moved to bring her to the Netherlands. Her age suggests potential. Her career already tells a different story.
Touon arrives with Bundesliga experience, European football behind her and four senior appearances for Switzerland. Ajax are not signing an untested prospect. They are signing a player who has spent the opening years of her career adapting to new countries, new systems and new expectations.
A Career That Has Refused To Stand Still
Ella Touon made her professional debut for SGS Essen in 2020. Breaking into a Frauen-Bundesliga side as a teenager placed her in one of Europe’s strongest domestic competitions from the beginning. Essen has long provided opportunities for young players, but surviving in that environment still demands tactical discipline and physical resilience.
After three seasons in Germany, Touon left for St. Pölten. The move to Austria brought a different kind of challenge. St. Pölten were expected to dominate domestically while also testing themselves in European competition, giving Touon experience of playing for a side that regularly carried the burden of expectation.
She returned to Germany in the summer of 2025, signing for FC Köln, before completing a loan move back to Essen six months later. That sequence could be mistaken for a career lacking direction. It may be more useful to view it as an unusually broad education.
Touon has experienced the pressure of establishing herself in the Bundesliga, the responsibility of playing for a dominant Austrian side and the uncertainty that comes with moving between clubs while still early in a career. Ajax will hope those experiences have accelerated her development.
More Than A Defensive Addition
Ajax technical manager Dolf Roks described Ella Touon as a reliable left-back with strong technical qualities and the dynamism to influence attacks.
Touon is not being brought in simply to hold a position and defend the touchline. Her profile suggests a full-back capable of contributing to the way Ajax want to build and sustain attacks.
A technically secure left-sided defender can help a team progress the ball under pressure, support midfield combinations and provide width when the player ahead moves inside. Touon’s energy also gives Ajax the option of asking her to overlap repeatedly or operate higher as a wing-back when the system changes.
Her experience in Germany should help with the defensive side of the role. Bundesliga football regularly exposes full-backs to quick transitions, direct running and physical duels, while her spell with St. Pölten required her to become comfortable playing in a team expected to control possession.
Those demands are different, but the combination is useful. Ajax need defenders who can cope when matches become stretched without becoming passengers when the team dominates the ball. Touon’s background suggests she has already worked in both environments.
Ajax’s Summer Is Taking Shape
Touon’s arrival continues a busy period of recruitment in Amsterdam. Katja Snoeijs has returned to the Netherlands after proving herself in France and England. Nadine Noordam has come back after a difficult season at Brighton, bringing familiarity and a point to prove. Touon adds another type of experience entirely.
She is younger than both, but her career has already been defined by movement. The three signings point towards a squad being built around players who have been tested outside the Eredivisie. Snoeijs offers proven goals. Noordam knows Ajax and understands the level required to compete for trophies. Touon brings international experience and a background across two foreign leagues.
That approach becomes even more significant after the departure of Danique Noordman to Juventus. Ajax have lost one of the Eredivisie’s leading young midfielders, a player whose development in Amsterdam earned her a move to one of Italy’s biggest clubs. Replacing that quality will not come through one signing alone.
Instead, the club appear to be spreading experience across the squad. Touon fits that strategy because she has already dealt with many of the challenges Ajax’s younger players may encounter later in their careers. She has left home, adapted abroad, changed leagues and returned to a familiar club when circumstances required it. At 22, she has already learned how quickly a career can change.
A Chance To Find Stability
The Ajax move may offer Ella Touon something that has been missing over the past year: clarity. Her time at Köln was interrupted by a loan return to Essen, meaning she has not spent long enough in one place to establish a clear role since leaving Austria.
Ajax can offer a more defined opportunity. The club have identified her as a player who can strengthen the left side of the defence while contributing in possession. The two-year contract is not an excessive long-term gamble, but it gives Touon enough time to settle and establish herself.
She is also joining a team expected to challenge for domestic honours. That responsibility will be new in its own way. St. Pölten carried similar expectations in Austria, but Ajax operate in a more competitive league and under greater scrutiny. Every signing is judged by whether it moves the club closer to championships and European qualification.
