FC Twente have signed defender Camie Mol from AZ on a two-year contract, bringing the former academy player back to the club after five seasons away.

The 24-year-old progressed through Twente’s youth structure between 2018 and 2021 but left before reaching the senior team. Spells with VV Alkmaar and AZ subsequently allowed her to establish herself in the Vrouwen Eredivisie.

Mol now returns with 106 senior appearances behind her and a far stronger chance of earning the first-team role she originally pursued as a young player. “I’m going home again,” Mol said after completing the transfer. “That’s how it feels.”

Why Leaving Twente Helped Mol Return

Mol joined FC Twente’s academy in the summer of 2018 after previously playing for De Esch and Quick ’20.

She progressed from the Under-12 level through to the reserve team, but the step into Twente’s senior side proved too large at that point in her development. Moving to VV Alkmaar in 2021 gave her access to the competitive minutes she needed.

Mol made her Vrouwen Eredivisie debut with the Alkmaar club before remaining in the city when AZ relaunched its women’s team in 2023.

“The first team at FC Twente was still a step too far for me at the time,” she explained. “Now I am returning to the club where, as a youth player, I wanted to reach the first team. The move to Alkmaar and AZ was necessary for me to become the player I am now. I learned a lot there.”

Her route is a useful example of why leaving an academy does not always represent the end of a player’s connection with that club. Senior experience elsewhere can create a pathway that was not available during the first attempt.

What Camie Mol Brings to FC Twente

Mol returns as a physically strong full-back with extensive experience in the Dutch top flight. She describes herself as a defender who wants to advance beyond her basic defensive responsibilities and contribute in attacking areas. That intent should suit a Twente side likely to spend significant periods controlling possession and asking its full-backs to support attacks.

Technical manager René Roord highlighted the same qualities when discussing the signing.

“At VV Alkmaar and AZ, she took a good next step as a player, and we are confident that she will continue to develop here at FC Twente,” Roord said.

“She has a lot of experience in the Vrouwen Eredivisie and has shown that she is a physically strong defender with the right attacking intentions.”

Mol has scored three times across her 106 senior appearances. Her scoring record is not the central attraction, but the experience accumulated over those matches should help her compete immediately for minutes.

A Different Player Returns to Twente

Mol is familiar with FC Twente, its academy and the region, having been born in Hengelo and raised in Oldenzaal. Familiarity alone did not earn her this transfer. She returns because her performances in Alkmaar demonstrated that she can operate consistently at Eredivisie level.

At 24, Mol is also entering a stage of her career where further improvement can be combined with immediate first-team responsibility. She is no longer an academy player waiting to discover whether she can handle senior football.

The next challenge is different: proving she can take the experience acquired at VV Alkmaar and AZ into an environment with higher competitive expectations. Mol once left Twente because the first team had arrived too soon. Five years and 106 appearances later, she returns because the timing finally fits.
