Ajax have completed the loan signing of Chelsea goalkeeper Femke Liefting for the 2026/27 season, bringing one of the Netherlands’ most highly regarded young goalkeepers back to the Eredivisie.
At first glance, the move appears straightforward. Ajax add a goalkeeper with experience in Dutch football, while Chelsea send a young player out on loan. However, the deal is more significant when viewed through the lens of Liefting’s development over the past 18 months.
Before joining Chelsea, she had already established herself as one of the Eredivisie’s most promising goalkeepers. Injury then interrupted that momentum. This loan offers an opportunity to rebuild it.

Chelsea Signed More Than A Prospect
Liefting’s move to Chelsea in January 2025 came after a rapid rise through Dutch football. Having progressed through FC Utrecht’s academy, she made her professional debut at VV Alkmaar before becoming a regular starter at AZ. By the time Chelsea completed her signing, she had already made more than 50 appearances in the Eredivisie and earned call-ups to the Netherlands senior squad.
She also represented the Netherlands at multiple youth international tournaments, including the Under-17 and Under-19 European Championships and the 2024 Under-20 World Cup.
Those achievements explain why Chelsea moved for her. The club recruited a player who had already proven she could perform consistently in senior football and who was widely viewed as one of the strongest goalkeeping prospects in the Dutch game.
Injury Changed The Timeline
The challenge for Femke Liefting was that her progress stalled shortly after arriving in England. Soon after joining Chelsea, she suffered a foot injury before making a first-team appearance. After recovering, the goalkeeper spent the 2025/26 season on loan with Newcastle United. While Chelsea remained an important step in her career, the injury meant valuable development time was lost during a crucial stage of her progression.
Decision-making, positioning, communication and game management are all sharpened through competitive football. At 21, regular playing time becomes increasingly important. That is what makes this loan particularly significant.
Why Ajax Makes Sense
Technical manager Dolf Roks highlighted Liefting’s previous performances in the Eredivisie and the experience she has gained since joining Chelsea. Those comments suggest Ajax view her as a player capable of contributing immediately rather than simply developing behind the scenes.
Liefting already knows the league, understands the demands of Dutch football and has experience facing Eredivisie opposition. Unlike many young players moving on loan, she does not need to adapt to an unfamiliar environment.
What Chelsea Gain From The Loan
From Chelsea’s perspective, this move looks like a continuation of the development plan rather than a departure from it.
The club signed Femke Liefting on a three-and-a-half-year contract and have consistently used loans to accelerate the development of young players. Sending her to Ajax provides an opportunity to gain regular minutes while remaining in a familiar football environment.
They want Liefting to experience consistent football and having regained the momentum that made her one of the Netherlands’ most exciting young goalkeepers before her move to England. A successful loan would leave Chelsea with a more experienced and more complete goalkeeper than the one who arrived in 2025.
Why It Matters
Liefting’s move to Chelsea was built on the progress she made at AZ, but injury prevented that momentum from continuing. Ajax now offers the chance to rebuild it. Before moving to England, she had already established herself as one of the Eredivisie’s most promising young goalkeepers and earned recognition from the Netherlands national team setup.
For a goalkeeper at this stage of her career, regular football is often more valuable than anything else. If this loan succeeds, Ajax gain a high-quality goalkeeper for the season and Chelsea could welcome back a player much closer to fulfilling the potential that prompted them to sign her in the first place.
