Laurent Bonadei has announced his France national team for the Women’s EURO 2025, with three notable absentees: Wendie Renard, Eugénie Le Sommer, and Kenza Dali. This marks the first time since 2009 that Renard is not part of the national team and Le Sommer is the team’s most capped player and all-time top scorer. Griedge Mbock will take over the captaincy. What Laurent Bonadei had to say
On Kessya Bussy: “Yes, it was not an obvious decision, especially since I had complicated the task myself by selecting a 24th player at some point. I still wanted to offer Kessya the opportunity to demonstrate all her talent and potential, because she is a very promising player.
“The choice was not easy. I finally favored specific profiles, such as that of Kelly Gago, a left-handed with a good size, which can make the difference in the stopped phases, both offensive and defensive. Kessya is clearly a player of the future. She had a very good season and she represents a real option for the French team in the long term.”
On working toward the Women’s EURO: “Indeed, when you participate in a European Championship, the 16 nations involved all have the goal of winning it. Switzerland, as a host country, will give everything in front of its audience. For our part, after a complicated start to the season that made us fall to 11th place in the FIFA ranking, our ambition is to regain places, little by little, to one day regain the status of favorite.
“But for that, you have to win first. Today, this French Team has not yet won a major title. That is why I consider that we cannot yet present ourselves as favorites. That said, in 1985, Mike Tyson was just a challenger and it was by multiplying victories that he became a favorite. So yes, I prefer that we are today in the shoes of the challenger. This does not diminish our ambition in any way: we will play every game to win it, with the desire to make the French proud. “
France schedule Women’s EURO 2025
The UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 group stage kicks off on July 2, with Iceland facing Finland, followed by host nation Switzerland taking on Norway later that evening. France are in Group D alongside the Netherlands, England, and Wales. They open their campaign against England in Zürich.
