Liverpool and Tottenham Hotspur both made convincing starts to the new Women’s Super League season, setting up an intriguing meeting at St Helens Stadium on Sunday.
Liverpool were the biggest winners of the opening WSL weekend, beating Charlton Athletic 4-0 as Grace Fisk scored twice and Vivien Endemann marked her competitive debut with a goal and an assist.
Tottenham’s new arrivals made an equally immediate impression. Kirsty Hanson scored twice on debut and Signe Gaupset contributed a goal and an assist in a 3-1 victory over West Ham United.
Sunday therefore provides a much tougher early examination of two sides that found plenty of attacking encouragement in their opening games.

Liverpool’s new attack makes an immediate impression
Gareth Taylor could hardly have asked for a more comfortable result to begin Liverpool’s league campaign.
Grace Fisk opened the scoring after eight minutes at The Valley before adding an excellent second shortly after half-time. Endemann then scored her first competitive Liverpool goal and Cornelia Kapocs completed the 4-0 victory from the penalty spot in stoppage time.
The performance of Endemann was particularly encouraging. Operating from the right, the summer signing repeatedly caused Charlton problems. She supplied the cutback for Fisk’s second before emphatically scoring Liverpool’s third herself.
Taylor described Endemann as a threat throughout the game and believes scoring on her debut should give the Germany international further confidence.
Liverpool also welcomed back Sam Kerr following a lengthy back problem, while Marie Höbinger returned from injury as a second-half substitute.
Liverpool team news
Liverpool have no fresh injury concerns following their 4–0 opening-day win over Charlton Athletic. Anna Josendal remains unavailable with a hamstring injury, leaving Taylor relatively short of natural options in wide areas.
Gareth Taylor confirmed that the players came through the game well, although there are a few minor niggles within the squad. There is also positive news on Sophie Roman Haug and Maizie Trueman, who are getting closer to a return and could move nearer to the squad this weekend.
Mari Ward and Lucy Parry remain unavailable, although Taylor expects both to return in the coming weeks. Their absence has required some adaptation at right-back, where Sam Kerr started against Charlton after also playing in the position during preseason.
Mao Itamura is also still to return, while Zara Shaw remains away at the World Cup. With Liverpool winning comfortably on the opening weekend and reporting no new injuries, Taylor has little reason to make major changes against Tottenham.
Predicted Liverpool lineup
Keating; Kerr, Fisk, Clark, Bernabe; Nagano, Maclean; Endemann, Holland, Kapocs; Olsson.
Predicted lineup will be updated following the latest team news.
Tottenham’s new arrivals offer Martin Ho more options
Tottenham’s summer recruitment immediately paid off against West Ham. Hanson scored twice on her competitive debut, but her performance was only one part of an encouraging afternoon for Martin Ho.
Gaupset opened the scoring after Julie Blakstad headed the ball into her path, before the Norway international carried possession forward and released Hanson for Tottenham’s second.
Hanson eventually completed her double with an excellent curling finish from outside the area. Caitlin Dijkstra also impressed on debut. She began at right-back before moving into central defence when Toko Koga was substituted, with Ho describing her performance as outstanding.
Victoria Pelova and Shekiera Martinez made their competitive Spurs debuts from the bench, giving Ho further options if he wants to change the game at St Helens.
Tottenham team news
Alice Sombath is a doubt for Tottenham’s trip to Liverpool but has returned to full training. The summer signing from OL Lyonnes has yet to make her competitive Tottenham debut, with Martin Ho taking a cautious approach to building up the defender’s workload. Sombath trained fully on Tuesday and Wednesday and will be assessed before a decision is made on her involvement at Liverpool.
Jess Naz, Maite Oroz and Lenna Gunning-Williams remain in partial training and are not yet ready to return, while Clare Hunt continues her recovery from injury.
Ho indicated that Sombath should be available for the following game against Crystal Palace even if Sunday’s match comes too soon. After Tottenham’s 3–1 opening victory over West Ham, there is therefore little reason to expect major changes to the starting XI at Liverpool.
Predicted Tottenham lineup
Kop; Dijkstra, Koga, Nildén, Blakstad; Summanen, Spence, Gaupset; Hanson, Tandberg, Vinberg.
Predicted lineup will be updated following the latest team news.
What could decide Liverpool vs Tottenham?
There is an interesting recent history between these teams. Tottenham won the first WSL meeting last season 2-1, but Liverpool responded with a 2-0 victory at St Helens in January. That match remained goalless until stoppage time, when Mia Enderby scored twice in quick succession to give Liverpool their first league victory of the season.
This weekend’s meeting could look very different. Both attacks have started the new campaign confidently, and there are threats across several areas of the pitch. One of the most interesting could be Liverpool’s right side.
Endemann was directly involved in two goals against Charlton and repeatedly found opportunities to attack from that flank. Tottenham will therefore need to prevent Liverpool from giving her the same space to drive forward or deliver into the penalty area.
At the other end, Liverpool have to deal with a Spurs attack that already looks capable of creating chances in several ways.
Gaupset can carry the ball forward from midfield, Hanson showed how dangerous she can be both running beyond the defence and cutting inside to shoot, while Tandberg gives Tottenham a focal point through the middle.
Ho nevertheless identified one area he wants to improve. Tottenham’s head coach does not want matches to become too stretched and transitional.
That could be particularly relevant at St Helens. Liverpool showed against Charlton that they can attack quickly when space appears, and Endemann’s pace gives them another way of exploiting an open game.
For two teams that started with convincing victories, Sunday’s match should provide a better indication of how much those opening performances can tell us about the season ahead.
Liverpool vs Tottenham Prediction
Liverpool’s 4-0 win was impressive, but Tottenham should provide considerably more resistance than newly promoted Charlton.
Spurs also arrive with confidence and several new players already making an impact. Their ability to threaten Liverpool through Hanson and Gaupset makes a clean sheet difficult to predict.
Prediction: Liverpool 2-3 Tottenham Hotspur
