Liverpool Women have confirmed their first departures of the summer, with defenders Gemma Bonner and Gemma Evans set to leave the club when their contracts expire at the end of the 2025/26 season. The duo are expected to say their farewells on Saturday as Liverpool conclude their Women’s Super League campaign against Arsenal.

It marks the beginning of what could be a significant summer rebuild for Liverpool after a difficult season in the WSL. The Reds currently sit 11th in the table with 17 points from four wins, five draws and twelve defeats. With one match remaining, Liverpool still have the opportunity to leapfrog West Ham United and finish 10th, ending the campaign on a more positive note.

The disappointing league position underlines how competitive the Women’s Super League has become in recent years. Liverpool will be hoping to strengthen the squad during the transfer window as they aim to climb back up the table next season.

Gemma Bonner leaves as Liverpool Women legend

Gemma Bonner departs Liverpool as one of the most influential players in the club’s history. The defender first joined the Reds in 2012 and quickly became a key figure, captaining Liverpool to back-to-back Women’s Super League titles in 2013 and 2014.

After leaving the club in 2018, Bonner enjoyed spells with Manchester City and Racing Louisville before returning to Liverpool in 2023. During her second spell at the club, she surpassed Ashley Hodson’s long-standing appearance record and cemented her place as Liverpool Women’s all-time leading appearance-maker.

Bonner currently sits on 186 appearances for the club and leaves behind a remarkable legacy. Despite injury problems limiting her to just 10 appearances this season, she has remained an important presence both on and off the pitch.

Head coach Gareth Taylor praised the defender’s determination ahead of Liverpool’s final game of the season, saying Bonner had “really pushed, probably ahead of schedule” in her recovery to be available for selection against Arsenal.

If she features on Saturday, it could provide supporters with one final chance to see one of Liverpool Women’s modern greats in red.

Gemma Evans departs after two seasons

Gemma Evans will also leave Liverpool after two seasons at the club. The defender joined from Manchester United in 2024 and went on to make 38 appearances for the Reds.

During the current campaign, Evans contributed both defensively and offensively, scoring against Sunderland in the Subway Women’s League Cup. Her versatility and professionalism made her a valuable squad member throughout her time at the club.

Speaking on Evans’ departure, Gareth Taylor said: “Gemma goes with our thanks for what she has done for this football club. I think she has had a real positive impact at the club, both on and off the pitch. She’s been fantastic to work with and is a real top professional.”

With Bonner and Evans both moving on, Liverpool Women now turn their attention towards a crucial summer transfer window as the club looks to improve on a challenging 2025/26 season and build a squad capable of competing higher up the WSL table.

For supporters, Saturday’s clash against Arsenal will not only mark the end of the season, but also the end of two important chapters in Liverpool Women history.
