Manchester City have signed Germany international Carlotta Wamser from Bayer Leverkusen, with the 22-year-old agreeing a four-year contract through to the summer of 2030.
The right-back becomes the latest addition to Andrée Jeglertz’s squad as City strengthen ahead of their Women’s Super League title defence and return to the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Wamser makes first move outside Germany
The transfer takes Wamser outside German club football for the first time in her senior career. She joined Bayer Leverkusen from Eintracht Frankfurt in the summer of 2025 and established herself as a regular during her season with the club. Wamser made 19 Frauen-Bundesliga appearances in 2025/26, starting 18 of them and scoring twice.
Her career in Germany has also included spells with SGS Essen and 1. FC Köln. Despite being only 22, she has already accumulated more than 100 appearances in the Frauen-Bundesliga.
Leverkusen confirmed that Wamser had asked to make the move after the opportunity to join Manchester City emerged. The club agreed to the transfer despite having wanted to continue working with the defender in the longer term.
Carlotta Wamser described joining City as the next step in her development. “The English league is the best league in the world and Manchester City are one of the best clubs in the world,” she told the club.
“I feel like I need the next step for my career and I feel that I can develop as a player here very well.”
Germany international adds another option at right-back
Wamser arrives with senior international experience after progressing through Germany’s youth teams. She was part of the Germany squad that reached the semi-finals of UEFA Women’s Euro 2025. Her tournament began as a substitute against Poland, but an injury to Giulia Gwinn brought her onto the pitch during the first half.
She went on to play an important role in Germany’s run, including completing all 120 minutes of the semi-final against eventual champions Spain. She had earned 14 senior caps and scored twice for Germany by the time her City move was announced.
Wamser can contribute further forward as well as at full-back, having played in more advanced positions earlier in her career. That versatility gives Jeglertz another option on the right side of his squad.
Manchester City add Wamser to German contingent
Carlotta Wamser will also find familiar faces when she joins up with City. Germany internationals Rebecca Knaak and Sydney Lohmann are already part of the squad, while Wamser will continue wearing the No. 37 shirt she used at Bayer Leverkusen.
City Director of Football Therese Sjögran said the club had been following the defender for some time and highlighted her energy and potential for further development.
Wamser now joins a Manchester City side preparing to compete on several fronts in 2026/27, with the reigning WSL and FA Cup winners also returning to the Champions League.
Carlotta Wamser career
Wamser began her senior career with SGS Essen before moving to Eintracht Frankfurt in 2022. She spent part of the 2023/24 campaign on loan at 1. FC Köln before returning to Frankfurt and later joining Bayer Leverkusen in 2025.
At international level, she represented Germany from Under-15 through to Under-20 level before making the step into the senior team. She was also part of the Germany side that won the UEFA Women’s Under-17 Championship in 2019.
Her move to Manchester City now begins the first overseas chapter of her club career.
