Starting in the 2025/2026 season, the Dutch Vrouwen Eredivisie will adopt a new pyramid structure designed to create a “clear, future-proof competition format while giving clubs the space to grow at their own pace”. This change is part of a long-term strategy to drive the growth and development of women’s football in the Netherlands through to 2030, in close collaboration with the clubs.
Statement KNVB (Dutch Football Federation): “With this structure, we offer all clubs the opportunity to grow in a way that aligns with their own development. Together, we strengthen women’s football in the Netherlands.”
What will change in the Vrouwen Eredivisie?
The new pyramid structure will consist of three tiers:
- The Vrouwen Eredivisie (elite level)
- The First Division
- The Second Division
The 2025/2026 season will begin with 12 teams in the Eredivisie, as NAC Breda joins the competition. At the end of the season, a maximum of three clubs will be relegated to the First Division.
Clubs in the First Division can be promoted to the Eredivisie, provided they meet the licensing requirements. As a result, the 2026/2027 Eredivisie will feature 10 teams. The First Division will start with seven teams in the first half of the 2025/2026 season and expand to eight teams in the second half.
The Second Division (formerly known as Poule B) will serve as the entry level for new clubs—such as FC Groningen, who will participate in the upcoming season. Promotion to the First Division is possible either mid-season or at the end of the season, as long as licensing criteria are met.
NAC Breda joins the Vrouwen Eredivisie
NAC Breda will replace Fortuna Sittard, who have withdrawn from the Vrouwen Eredivisie for the upcoming season. As the highest-ranked first team in the Eerste Divisie A, NAC earned the right to be promoted. With NAC Women joining the Eurojackpot Women’s Eredivisie, the top tier of professional women’s football in the Netherlands will consist of 12 teams next season.
