Tottenham Hotspur and Arsenal meet in the first Women’s Super League north London derby of the 2026/27 season on Saturday, 24 October, with both teams desperate to reverse their recent fortunes.

The 12:45pm BST kick-off at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium brings together two sides facing very different problems. Spurs have scored freely but suffered heavy defensive setbacks, while Arsenal have struggled to turn possession and chances into goals.

Tottenham sit fourth with ten points from six matches, four ahead of eighth-placed Arsenal. Despite that advantage, neither side approaches the derby with much momentum.

Tottenham Looking to Recover From Heavy Defeats

Martin Ho’s Tottenham made an impressive start to the campaign, recording victories over West Ham United, Crystal Palace and Aston Villa. Their attacking approach produced 18 goals in six WSL matches, an average of three per game. However, the defensive problems have become impossible to ignore.

Spurs followed a 6-1 home defeat against London City Lionesses with a 6-2 loss at Chelsea last weekend. Those results mean they have conceded 12 goals in their last two league fixtures, taking their season total to 14.

Ho believes individual errors and a lack of experience have contributed to the recent setbacks, rather than a complete failure of Tottenham’s playing style. Speaking ahead of the derby, he acknowledged that his team must show greater defensive resilience without abandoning its attacking identity.

“You have to play the game, not the occasion,” Ho said, emphasising the importance of remaining brave in possession while accepting that Tottenham will have periods without the ball.

Former Arsenal midfielder Victoria Pelova adds another dimension to the fixture. The Dutch international has made an immediate impact since joining Spurs during the summer and will be eager to impress against her former club.

Arsenal Under Pressure to End Winless Run

Arsenal’s difficulties have been less dramatic but equally concerning. Renée Slegers’ side have collected just six points from their opening six league matches, with one victory, three draws and two defeats.

Their latest disappointment came in a 1-1 home draw against Birmingham City, when Arsenal registered 27 shots but managed only one goal. Across the league campaign, Arsenal have scored just five times, averaging 0.8 goals per match despite enjoying 62.8% possession.

The contrast with Tottenham’s attacking output is striking, particularly given Arsenal’s established attacking options. Slegers has acknowledged that her team must become quicker and less predictable when breaking down opposition defences.

“Being faster is absolutely something we’ve worked on,” she explained, pointing to the need for more decisive attacking movements and better execution in the final third.

Arsenal have also been vulnerable when opponents break through their defensive structure, an issue that could become particularly important against Tottenham’s aggressive approach.

Team News: Jess Naz Could Return for Tottenham

Tottenham have received an encouraging boost with Jess Naz back in contention after approximately ten months on the sidelines. The forward suffered an anterior cruciate ligament injury against Aston Villa in December 2025 but has impressed in training during the past ten days.

Ho confirmed that Naz could be included in the matchday squad, although her involvement remains uncertain. Olga Ahtinen is still unavailable with a knock, while Clare Hunt continues her injury recovery.

Arsenal will be without captain Kim Little, who is managing a knock, and Chloe Kelly, who remains sidelined with a hamstring problem.

Goalkeeper Daphne van Domselaar will return to the squad environment but is not yet ready to play. Katie Reid has resumed team training, while Michelle Agyemang continues her rehabilitation.

Head-to-Head Record Favours Arsenal

Arsenal have historically dominated the WSL north London derby, winning ten of their 13 meetings with Tottenham, alongside two draws and one defeat. Their recent results underline that advantage.

The Gunners recorded a 5-0 victory in February 2025 and a 5-2 win in March 2026, although the corresponding fixture at Tottenham in November 2025 ended goalless.

Alessia Russo has been particularly effective in this fixture, scoring eight WSL goals against Spurs, more than against any other opponent. The historical record offers Arsenal encouragement, but their current scoring difficulties mean another comfortable victory cannot be taken for granted.

Key Battle: Tottenham’s Risk-Taking Against Arsenal’s Possession

The tactical contest could determine whether this becomes an open derby or a more controlled encounter. Tottenham average 57.7% possession and have shown a willingness to press aggressively and commit players forward. That approach has helped generate goals but also exposed space when possession is lost.

Arsenal, meanwhile, have averaged 62.8% possession without producing a comparable attacking return. Slegers described Tottenham’s approach as “high-risk, high-reward football”, suggesting Arsenal will look for opportunities to exploit the spaces created by Spurs’ attacking ambition.

Ho has acknowledged that his team may need to defend its penalty area for extended periods, but he also wants Tottenham to remain creative when opportunities arise.

Arsenal’s challenge is to convert territorial control into clear chances and goals. Tottenham must demonstrate that their defensive problems can be addressed without sacrificing the attacking qualities that brought their early success.

North London Derby: What to Expect

The atmosphere should provide an additional edge, with almost 4,000 Arsenal supporters having sold out their away allocation at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

Both managers recognise the significance of the occasion, but neither can afford to let the derby atmosphere distract from the problems their teams need to solve.

Tottenham have an opportunity to consolidate fourth place and demonstrate that their recent heavy defeats were temporary setbacks. Arsenal urgently need a victory to prevent their difficult league start from becoming an even greater obstacle.

With Spurs’ attacking strength, Arsenal’s possession-based approach and the recent defensive concerns on both sides, Saturday’s derby promises an intriguing test of which team can respond more effectively under pressure.
