Here’s a closer look at the confirmed ties and how each side reached the last eight.

Confirmed Women’s FA Cup Quarter-Final Ties

  • Charlton Athletic vs Liverpool
  • Chelsea vs Tottenham Hotspur
  • Arsenal vs Brighton & Hove Albion
  • Birmingham City vs Manchester City

Charlton Athletic vs. Liverpool

Charlton Athletic Women booked their place in the quarter-finals with a narrow win over Oxford United in the fifth round. It was a tight first half with few clear chances, before Lucy Fitzgerald converted a decisive penalty to send Charlton through.

They now face Liverpool F.C. Women, who edged past Everton 2-1 in their previous tie. Liverpool struck twice in the first half and, despite conceding with 20 minutes remaining, held on to secure progression.

The two sides are familiar with one another. During the 2021/22 Women’s Championship season, both league meetings ended in draws (2-2 and 0-0), suggesting another closely contested encounter could be on the cards.

Chelsea vs. Tottenham Hotspur

Chelsea F.C. Women progressed after a dramatic 2-1 victory over Manchester United. United goalkeeper Phallon Tullis-Joyce produced several important saves in the first half to deny the Blues.

Sam Kerr made an immediate impact off the bench, opening the scoring, but Simi Awujo equalised just three minutes later. The decisive moment came in extra time, when Naomi Girma found the winner. Chelsea then withstood sustained late pressure to secure their place in the quarter-finals.

Tottenham Hotspur F.C. Women had an even more dramatic route to the last eight. Their fifth-round clash with London City Lionesses finished 2-2 after extra time, forcing a marathon penalty shootout. A remarkable 17 penalties were converted before Lize Kop saved Wassa Sangaré’s effort, sealing a 9-8 victory.

Tottenham will now face a side they have yet to beat in competitive fixtures, adding further intrigue to the London derby.

Arsenal vs. Brighton & Hove Albion

Arsenal W.F.C. advanced with a comfortable 3-0 win over Bristol City. Veteran midfielder Kim Little opened the scoring, before Victoria Pelova doubled the advantage in the second half. An own goal from Katie Robinson sealed the result and confirmed Arsenal’s progression.

Brighton & Hove Albion W.F.C. secured a 2-1 victory over West Ham United. Fran Kirby and Kiko Seike scored inside the opening 20 minutes to put Brighton in control. Substitute Leila Wandeler pulled one back with 15 minutes remaining, but West Ham were unable to find an equaliser.

Recent meetings suggest this tie could be competitive. Brighton recorded a 4-2 win over Arsenal in the Women’s Super League last season, while Arsenal claimed a 1-0 league victory in October in this campaign.

Birmingham City vs. Manchester City

Birmingham City W.F.C. enter the quarter-finals after an emphatic 8-0 victory over Chatham Town. After leading by just one goal at half-time, Birmingham produced a dominant second-half display, scoring seven times.

Manchester City W.F.C. also progressed comfortably, defeating Sheffield United 4-0. Lauren Hemp scored twice, while Aoba Fujino and Laura Coombs added further goals.

The final quarter-final tie will see Birmingham take on Manchester City, a fixture with significant history. City are currently on an eight-game winning run against Birmingham across league and cup competitions. Birmingham’s most recent victory in the matchup came in 2018, when they secured a 2-0 win.
