How does the Women’s Subway Players Cup 2026/27 work?

The 2026/27 competition introduces a significant change to its format.

For the first time, the Subway Players Cup uses a single league phase rather than separate groups.

A total of 23 clubs from BWSL and BWSL2 participate in this phase. Manchester City, Arsenal and Chelsea are absent while competing in the UEFA Women’s Champions League.

Each participating club plays six league-phase matches between September and December, with results contributing to one combined table.

At the conclusion of the league phase, the eight highest-placed clubs advance to the quarter-finals.

The knockout schedule is:

  • Quarter-finals: January 2027
  • Semi-finals: February 2027
  • Final: March 2027

The new format brings together clubs from the top two divisions in one standings table, creating opportunities for teams to test themselves against opponents from different levels of the women’s football pyramid.

Looking ahead to December

The remaining league-phase programme continues in December, including fixtures scheduled for Wednesday 16 December.

Among the matches shown on the upcoming schedule are Watford against West Ham United, Southampton against Brighton & Hove Albion, London City Lionesses against Bristol City, Leicester City against Charlton Athletic, Ipswich Town against Tottenham Hotspur, and Newcastle United against Manchester United.

Other December fixtures include Sunderland against Everton, Burnley against Liverpool, Birmingham City against Nottingham Forest, Crystal Palace against Wolverhampton Wanderers, and Aston Villa against Sheffield United.

The December results will help determine the final top-eight positions and which clubs progress to January’s quarter-finals.

What’s at stake in November?

With six league-phase matches per club and only eight quarter-final places available, the November programme represents an important stage of the competition.

The combined format means that clubs from BWSL2 have the opportunity to compete directly with BWSL opposition, while established top-flight sides must perform consistently to secure qualification.

As the league phase approaches its conclusion, attention will increasingly turn to the standings and the battle for the eight knockout places.

The Women’s Subway Players Cup final is scheduled for March 2027, when the remaining two teams will compete for the trophy.
