Manchester City returned to the top of the Women’s Super League table on Saturday 7 November 2026 after thrashing West Ham United 5-0, while title rivals Chelsea were held to a 1-1 draw by Everton at Stamford Bridge.

Khadija Shaw scored a hat-trick for the defending champions, taking her league tally to 12 goals, while Lucy Bronze’s unfortunate own goal cost Chelsea two valuable points.

The results leave City two points clear of Chelsea ahead of next Saturday’s highly anticipated meeting between the title contenders. Here is our recap of Saturday’s WSL action, including the key moments, standout performances and implications for the title race.

Manchester City 5-0 West Ham United: Shaw hat-trick sends champions top

Manchester City produced a dominant performance at the Joie Stadium, with Khadija Shaw scoring three times as Andrée Jeglertz’s side recorded their eighth league victory of the season.

City created several opportunities during the first half, with Aoba Fujino twice going close before Shaw eventually broke the deadlock. The Jamaican striker finished a flowing attacking move that began with Lauren Hemp winning possession high up the pitch.

West Ham defender Laia Codina had earlier produced an excellent block to deny Shaw, but the visitors struggled to contain City’s attacking movement.

City take control after half-time

Manchester City increased their attacking intensity after the interval. Fujino initially struck the crossbar from close range before Shaw doubled City’s advantage, heading home Hemp’s cross despite goalkeeper Constance Picaud-Inconnu getting a hand to the ball.

Fujino eventually got her reward with an impressive individual goal. After winning possession inside her own half, the Japan international drove forward and found the bottom corner from the edge of the penalty area.

Substitute Iman Beney then scored her first WSL goal of the season when her effort deflected off West Ham midfielder Katie Zelem following another intelligent cut-back from Hemp.

Shaw completed her hat-trick with an assist from Grace Clinton before being substituted. The treble was Shaw’s ninth in WSL history, extending her record as the competition’s most prolific hat-trick scorer.

Her 12 league goals this season are now double the total of the division’s next-highest scorers.

Important clean sheet for City

Beyond their attacking display, City also recorded only their second WSL clean sheet of the season. It was the first league shutout of the campaign for goalkeeper Ayaka Yamashita, achieved without captain Alex Greenwood, who missed the match with a minor injury requiring assessment.

The result was particularly significant after City had spent two weeks behind Chelsea in the standings. With Chelsea dropping points against Everton, Jeglertz’s team now lead the title race outright.

Chelsea 1-1 Everton: Bronze own goal frustrates Blues

Chelsea surrendered first place after being held to a 1-1 draw by a resilient Everton side at Stamford Bridge. Sonia Bompastor’s team dominated possession and controlled much of the first half, eventually taking the lead through Sandy Baltimore.

The opening goal came from a well-executed corner routine. Lucy Bronze cushioned a header across the penalty area, allowing Baltimore to head home. However, Everton responded with an unexpected equaliser.

Yuka Momiki delivered a dangerous cross into Chelsea’s penalty area, and the ball struck the back of Bronze’s heel before finding the net past Hannah Hampton. It was an unfortunate moment for the England international, who was making her 150th WSL appearance.

Everton withstand Chelsea pressure

Bronze almost restored Chelsea’s lead before half-time, but her header struck the crossbar following another set-piece opportunity. Chelsea continued to attack after the break, with Ellie Carpenter providing an important outlet down the flank.

However, Everton’s defensive organisation made it difficult for the hosts to create clear-cut chances. The visitors maintained their shape, challenged Chelsea in possession and limited the effectiveness of Bompastor’s attacking players.

Chelsea also struggled without injured playmaker Lauren James, whose creativity was noticeably missed. Despite controlling much of the match, the Blues could not find a winning goal.

Everton registered only three attempts and failed to record a shot on target, underlining how unusual their equaliser had been. Remarkably, Bronze’s own goal was the third own goal to benefit Everton this season, making own goals their leading source of league goals. For Chelsea, the draw ended a run of seven consecutive WSL victories and represented their first dropped points since the opening weekend.

WSL title race: Manchester City move two points clear

Saturday’s results have changed the balance at the top of the Women’s Super League. Manchester City entered the weekend level on points with Chelsea but behind on goal difference.

Their emphatic victory over West Ham, combined with Chelsea’s draw against Everton, has now given the defending champions a two-point advantage.

City’s attacking form is particularly impressive, with Shaw continuing to lead the scoring charts and other players contributing important goals. Chelsea, meanwhile, remain formidable opponents but will be disappointed not to have converted their dominance against Everton into three points.

The results also highlight the importance of defensive organisation in the WSL. Everton demonstrated that disciplined defending can frustrate even the league’s strongest attacking teams.

Chelsea vs Manchester City: Huge title showdown next weekend

The two title contenders will meet at Stamford Bridge on Saturday 14 November, with kick-off scheduled for 13:30 GMT. Manchester City will arrive knowing that victory would extend their advantage to five points.

Chelsea, however, have an opportunity to reclaim first place with a home win. Before that encounter, Bompastor’s side travel to BK Häcken in the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Tuesday, adding another challenge to their preparation.

Everton’s next fixtures include a Players’ Cup meeting with Durham on Wednesday before an away league match against Tottenham on Saturday.

With Manchester City leading by two points and Chelsea determined to respond, next weekend’s meeting promises to be one of the defining early encounters of the 2026/27 WSL title race.
