Alexia Putellas will leave FC Barcelona Femení after 14 years at the club, bringing an end to one of the most successful eras in women’s football history.
Barcelona officially confirmed Putellas’ departure after months of speculation surrounding her future. The two-time Ballon d’Or winner had recently been linked with a move to London City Lionesses in the Women’s Super League.
Putellas joined Barcelona in 2012 and became the face of the club’s rise to European dominance. During her time in Catalonia, she helped Barça Femení win multiple Liga F titles, domestic cups and UEFA Women’s Champions League trophies while establishing herself as one of the defining players of her generation.
Supporters will have the opportunity to say farewell to the club captain on Wednesday, 27 May at Spotify Camp Nou at 11 a.m. CEST.
Alexia Putellas’ FC Barcelona Legacy
The midfielder leaves as one of the greatest players in Barcelona history. She made 507 appearances for the club, the second-highest total ever, trailing only Melanie Serrano. Her 232 goals remain a club record.
Across her career with Barcelona, Putellas won 38 trophies, including four UEFA Women’s Champions League titles, 10 league titles, 10 Copas de la Reina trophies, six Spanish Super Cups and eight Copas Catalunya titles.
She also became the first Barcelona Femení player to win the Ballon d’Or, claiming the award in both 2021 and 2022.
Putellas suffered a serious ACL injury ahead of UEFA Women’s EURO 2022, raising doubts over whether she could return to her previous level. However, the Spain international successfully rebuilt her form and reinforced her status as a club icon.
Her next destination has not yet been officially confirmed, although reports continue to link her with London City Lionesses. Current Barcelona teammate Mapi León has also been linked with a move to England.
Ona Batlle Linked With Arsenal Move
Ona Batlle is reportedly close to joining Arsenal Women ahead of the new Women’s Super League season.
Batlle progressed through Barcelona’s academy system before moving to Manchester United Women, where she established herself as one of Europe’s leading full-backs. During her spell in England, she won Manchester United’s Player of the Season award and became one of the league’s standout defenders.
She returned to Barcelona in 2023 and immediately became an important part of a squad that won Liga F, the Copa de la Reina, the Spanish Super Cup and the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
At international level, Batlle has become a central figure for Spain. She played every match during Spain’s 2023 FIFA Women’s World Cup triumph and was also part of the squad that reached the UEFA Women’s EURO 2025 final and the semi-finals of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
Marta Torrejón Expected To Leave Barcelona
Veteran defender Marta Torrejón is also expected to leave Barcelona this summer, according to multiple reports.
Torrejón has been one of the club’s most experienced leaders and remains highly respected within the dressing room. Her departure would mark another major change during an important transition period for Barcelona Femení.
