Arsenal have officially completed the signing of England international Georgia Stanway, bringing one of Europe’s most accomplished midfielders back to the Women’s Super League after four trophy-laden years with Bayern Munich.

The 27-year-old becomes Arsenal’s first signing of the 2026/27 summer transfer window and arrives with an impressive record that includes domestic titles in both England and Germany, international success with the Lionesses and a reputation as one of the most complete midfielders in the women’s game.

While the transfer has now been confirmed, the move has been a long time coming. According to Tim Stillman of Arseblog, Arsenal attempted to sign Stanway last summer, but Bayern Munich were unwilling to sanction a deal at the time. A year later, Arsenal have finally landed a player they clearly identified as a priority target.

Why Arsenal Wanted Stanway

Arsenal’s midfield was already one of the strongest in Europe, but Stanway brings something slightly different.

Throughout her career, she has combined technical quality with relentless intensity, leadership and a winning mentality. Those traits have become increasingly valuable as Arsenal look to build on last season’s success and establish themselves among the elite teams in Europe.

Head coach Renée Slegers highlighted exactly those qualities after the announcement.

“Georgia is a brilliant midfielder and we’re thrilled that she is an Arsenal player,” Slegers said. “She will add a new dimension to our midfield, bringing experience and adding to our winning mentality.”

That winning mentality is difficult to ignore. Georgia Stanway won one Women’s Super League title, three FA Cups and three League Cups during her time at Manchester City before adding four consecutive Bundesliga titles, two DFB-Pokal trophies and two German Super Cups at Bayern Munich. Few players in Europe arrive with a recent trophy record that can match hers.

Four Years Of Growth In Germany

When Stanway left Manchester City for Bayern Munich in 2022, the move represented a significant step outside her comfort zone. The decision ultimately proved to be one of the most successful of her career.

Across four seasons in Germany, Stanway made 128 appearances, scored 32 goals and established herself as one of the leading central midfielders in Europe. Speaking after her Arsenal announcement, Stanway reflected positively on her time in Munich.

“My time at Bayern was unbelievable to be honest,” she said. “I had four amazing years and I don’t have a bad thing to say about Bayern. I absolutely loved every minute that I spent there.”

However, she also revealed that she felt ready for a new challenge.

“It was time to take another challenge and this is what Arsenal is. It’s another challenge for me. It’s an opportunity to better myself as a player and as a person.”

That ambition appears to align perfectly with Arsenal’s own trajectory under Slegers.

Returning Home

A major factor behind the move appears to be Stanway’s desire to return to England. Despite enjoying Germany, she admitted she missed playing in front of English supporters and was attracted by Arsenal’s vision for the women’s game.

“When I found out that Arsenal wanted to sign me it was a really proud feeling,” she explained. “It’s a massive club. Where they’re taking the women’s game is to new levels and new heights and I just wanted to be a part of that.”

The move will also reunite Georgia Stanway with several Lionesses teammates, including Alessia Russo, Leah Williamson and Lotte Wubben-Moy.

Those existing relationships may help ease her transition into Arsenal’s dressing room ahead of what promises to be a demanding campaign across multiple competitions.

More Than Just A Midfielder

Beyond her footballing qualities, Arsenal appear to have signed a player whose influence extends beyond the pitch. Stanway was awarded an MBE in 2026 for services to football and has become one of the most recognisable figures in the Lionesses setup.

Her leadership qualities were highlighted by Arsenal Director of Women’s Football Clare Wheatley.

“Georgia is among the best midfielders in the world with a proven track record of success at club and international level,” Wheatley said. “She brings strong leadership, character and competitiveness.”

For a squad filled with international talent but still developing under a relatively new coaching staff, those attributes could prove just as valuable as her performances on the pitch.

What Happens Next?

Stanway will join Arsenal’s pre-season preparations immediately and is expected to play a prominent role in Renée Slegers’ plans for the upcoming campaign. After waiting a year to secure her signature, Arsenal have finally landed one of their priority targets.

The challenge now is turning that investment into silverware. If Stanway can bring even a fraction of the success she enjoyed at Bayern Munich to North London, Arsenal may have secured one of the most significant signings of the summer.
